Fresh Designs Deliver Strong Results for Capel at Winter Markets
Capel Rugs had a busy market in Las Vegas January 27 to 31 as retailers responded to a host of fashionable new imported and domestically made rugs across a wide range of styles, price points and constructions.

"We had a fantastic market in Las Vegas, with strong traffic and very good orders," said Cameron Capel, president -- sales and marketing for Capel Rugs. "Our results before market had even ended were way ahead of last January. We saw lots of new customers and our current customers also were responding well to our new designs as well as other introductions from the past 12 months."

In Las Vegas, "there was a very positive energy throughout our showroom and the market as a whole," Capel added. "Retailers are optimistic about their prospects for 2019 and are taking steps to strengthen their rug offerings with better goods like ours that offer strong margin opportunities."

Capel Rugs featured a number of new designs and line extensions at the Las Vegas Market and at the Atlanta International Area Rug Market held January 9 to 13.

Leading the way for Capel Rugs was Tasanee, a new contemporary collection with an abstract, painterly feeling. Hand knotted in India, Tasanee features a wool construction with a touch of viscose for added depth and sheen. Three colorways are available, including ocean, morning dove and amber multi. A 5' x 8' model may retail for under $2,000.

"This is a very high-end look at a much more affordable price than is typical," Capel said. "The design is gorgeous and the subtle, on-trend colors mix and match to create a series of eye-catching designs with a dream-like quality."

Also making a big splash in Las Vegas and Atlanta were three creative new collections added to Capel Rugs' popular Genevieve Gorder line of licensed rugs. Two of the new collections -- Intersection and Canyon -- feature bold contemporary patterns.

Intersection, in tufted wool, is a lively geometric design. Sporting wide bands of related colors intersecting in a zigzag-like pattern, Intersection is offered in three on-trend colorways -- storm, a mix of black, charcoal and grey tones; sand, a mix of earthy browns; and slate, a mix of crisp blues, white and grey. Sourced from India, a 5' x 8' model may retail for $449.

Organic and inviting, Canyon also creatively combines bands of color in a curvaceous, nature-inspired contemporary pattern. Made in India of tufted wool, Canyon is available in two colorways -- sand and storm. A 5' x 8' model may retail for $449.

The third new collection added to the Genevieve Gorder line is Brass Belly. Inspired by a timeless Art Nouveau design Gorder created for Tempaper, a wallcovering licensing partner, Brass Belly features rows of overlapping scallop shapes presented in duos of harmonious tones. Three colorways are available -- storm (a blend of grey and charcoal), stone (rich brown tones) and ocean (blues and greens). Constructed in India, Brass Belly is made of space-dyed yarns for extra texture.

"All three of these fresh Genevieve Gorder designs drew an enthusiastic response from retailers and interior designers," Capel said. "Modern and hip, they target the Millennial audience that Genevieve has such a strong relationship with through her social media channels and TV presence."

During the Atlanta market, Gorder participated in a panel discussion about licensing called "Licensing Demystified." The session, which took place on January 11, featured Jane Dagmi, editor in chief of Designers Today, who served as moderator. Other participants included Denise McGaha of Denise McGaha Interiors, on behalf of Design Legacy, and Jason Oliver Nixon and John Loecke of Madcap Cottage, on behalf of Port 68.

Gorder also visited the Capel Rugs showroom on January 10 to meet with retailers and interior designers.

Another new Capel Rugs collection in the spotlight at the winter shows was Charlemont. A hand-tufted design made in India, Charlemont features a blend of 75% wool and 25% viscose for a rich shine and enhanced texture. Five colorways are available -- sage, charcoal, medium blue, navy and taupe. Offered in 5' x 8', 8' x 10', 9' x 12' and 10' x 14' sizes, a 5'x 8' may retail for under $600.

At the winter markets, Capel Rugs also did well with new colorations added to several of its biggest hits from the October High Point Market. Especially well received was Makrana, an elegant traditional look with light distressing that has been expanded with two new colorways -- alabaster and mink. Hand knotted in India of a wool and viscose blend, this collection comes in 3'6" x 5'6", 5'6" x 8'6", 8' x 10' and 9' x 12' sizes. A 5'6" x 8'6" rug may retail for $1,799.

On the domestically sourced side of its business, Capel Rugs' updated Cotswold design was a hit. Flat woven on the company's vintage looms in Troy, North Carolina, Cotswold features a timeless plaid design in a subtle basket weave. Constructed of a wool blend for durability, Cotswold is available two colorways -- blue stone and nightshadow. Sizes include 24" x 48", 3' x 5', 5' x 8', 7' x 9', 8' x 11' and 24' x 8' runner. A 5' x 8' rug may retail for $699.

"Cotswold placed well with brick-and-mortar stores as well as catalogs and online merchants," Capel said. "It's a strong value with a classic look that works well in a wide range of settings."
