WHY ARE WET FLOORS SLIPPERY
Most ceramic tiles are not manufactured to be slip resistant in wet conditions. In order to obtain a high shine on the floor, the tiles are double or even triple fired during the manufacturing process. The result of this glazing is that there are no pores in the tile so that any water on the surface has nowhere to go, resulting in hydroplaning.
New quarry tile has very good traction in wet conditions since there are millions of natural channels through which surface water can flush. The problem with this type of surface as well as with “anti-slip” ceramic tiles is that they become contaminated. They lose their natural traction over time, a phenomenon known as polymerization.
Polymerization is a build up that occurs when microscopic particles of alkaline residue, together with microscopic particles of grease and soil, lodge themselves into the pores of mineral surfaces. Over time they harden and form a crust which fills up the pores, blocking up the exit routes for water to flush out from underfoot. If a ceramic or quarry tile is cleaned with an alkaline or neutral cleaner for a period of time (research has shown that a vast majority of the “neutral cleaners” which are available are slightly alkaline), the microscopic particles of soda ash residue will lodge themselves into the natural crevices in the tile, attracting and binding microscopic particles of grease and soil. Over time, this process will effectively smooth out the surface of the tile, resulting in a loss of traction when the tile is wet.
Y-SLIP TREATMENT FORMULA
A patented floor treatment product for use on ceramic and quarry tile surfaces, Y-Slip sets a new standard of care in the prevention of slips and falls. Y-Slip actually micro-treats the floor opening up microscopic pores in the tile. When a person walks on the wet floor, the pressure of their foot forces the liquid into the pores so that the person walks on the tile rather than aquaplaning on the liquid. On quarry tile, Y-Slip will dissolve accumulated contamination, which has built up over a period of time due to the use of alkaline cleaners, in one treatment. It effectively acts as a super decontaminant, rather than a micro-etching agent.
Simple and safe to use, it is sprayed on the floor surface using a standard pump-up sprayer. It is left on the floor for a few minutes (the time varies for each floor but typically averages 7 minutes) and then is neutralized with Neutralizer which is included in the package. Once this is done, the residue may be either mopped up, squeegeed into the drain or left to air dry. Please note that a slight discolouration of the tile is possible and the product must be tested on a small area prior to general use.
The anti-slip feature will last between one and three years depending on traffic patterns. A single 3.8 Litre bottle will cover up to 500 square feet. Y-Slip comes with simple instructions so that anyone can apply the product.
