ASID NJ Innovation in Action Design Symposium & Trade Show
There will also be building tours and a wine and beer gathering.
Attendees can choose an all-inclusive or à la carte schedule.
The Run of the Day
The morning begins with CEUs that are sure to make everyone informed:
• Knoll: Florence Knoll – Defining Modern (.01 CEU Basic – IDCEC, AIA)
• Sub-Zero Wolf: Luxury Kitchen Specifications for Aging in Place (01. CEU HSW, IDCEC, AIA, NKBA)
Then, the Keynote Luncheon, as stated above, features Alexander Gorlin FAIA, a noted architect, urban planner, design critic and author, who will speak about the Bell Works restoration. He is principal of Alexander Gorlin Architects, founded in 1987, and specializes in a wide range of design programs that span the economic and cultural spectrum, including religious institutions, schools, high-end residential and supportive and affordable housing. Gorlin is known for his inventive use of space, light and natural materials. He holds architecture degrees from Cooper Union and the Yale School of Architecture, and was a Rome Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Rome. He is the author of five books including two on the contemporary American Townhouses and most recently on Kabbalah in Art and Architecture, which won the National Jewish Book Award in 2013. Following his talk, he will give a book signing.
The Trade Show runs from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and will continue to inform and inspire attendees with the latest products and 70-plus resources.
Students
From 1:30 to 2:30, there will be a resume drop-off, NJ ASID orientation and a talk by Liza Kuhn of LKI Homes Hospitality. Kuhn will give students a behind-the scenes glimpse into the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities that will be encountered when embarking on a career in the ever-expanding interior design industry. Kuhn received her MFA in Interior Design from Parsons School of Design and her BA in Architecture from Princeton University. She is part-time faculty at Parsons School of Design, where she teaches architectural design studios, professional practice and history of design courses.
Bell Works Metroburb Tours
At 11:00 or 5:15 p.m., attendees can take a half-hour tour of the Bell Works building, a landmark structure of steel and glass, once called the largest mirror in the world with more than two-million square feet of space. As Bell Labs, it was considered the innovation hub of mid-century technology.
Conclusion
The Chapter invites all area trade, including interior designers, architects, industrial designers and students, to participate in this stimulating day-long event. Members of other ASID chapters, the American Institute of Architects (AIA), the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), the Interior Design Society (IDS), the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), the International Furnishings & Design Association (IFDA), the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and the Window Coverings Association of America (WCAA) are among those welcome.
“Innovation in Action promises to be our best event yet, allowing attendees to gain new insights in the field of design, cultivate new relationships and discover new products and resources in this stimulating, interactive environment," said Holly George, President of the New Jersey Chapter of ASID. "It’s also a great opportunity for our Industry Partners and others to exhibit their latest innovations to a receptive audience and to strengthen connections with the design community. Exhibitors and sponsors will enjoy never-before-seen opportunities for product and brand visibility."
About ASID
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) believes that design transforms lives. ASID serves the full range of the interior design profession and practice through the Society’s programs, networks, and advocacy. We thrive on the strength of cross-functional and interdisciplinary relationships among designers of all specialties, including workplace, healthcare, retail and hospitality, education, institutional, and residential. We lead interior designers in shared conversations around topics that matter: from evidence-based and humancentric design to social responsibility, well-being, and sustainability. We showcase the impact of design on the human experience and the value interior designers provide. ASID was founded 40 years ago when two organizations became one, but its legacy dates back to the early 1930s. As we celebrate nearly 85 years of industry leadership, we are leading the future of interior design, continuing to integrate the advantages of local connections with national reach, of small firms with big, and of the places we live with the places we work, play, and heal.
