Western Juniper is common in the high altitudes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California and the high deserts of Central Oregon. This species may develop thick, long roots that entwine rock outcrops which is mimicked in the shape of the twisted branches. Finding a dying twisted Juniper is itself a difficult task because they are often located on high rock outcroppings far off the beaten path.
Once found, I visualize what I want to do with it before bringing it back to my wood shop. Once there, it is trimmed to the shape I want and power-washed to bring out the luster of the Juniper and the contrast between the light and dark wood. Each limb is unique and different creating a one of a kind piece of furniture.
