Mary and Joe Arnold started East & Beyond, Ltd. immediately upon Joe's retirement from the Army in April 1994. Four years in Japan provided the impetus to bring Japanese, Chinese, and Korean antiques to homes on the east coast of the United States.
While the merchant kings of the clipper ship days knew how to mix East with West, their descendants have lost the feel of the Orient. The name East & Beyond was suggested by the eldest Arnold daughter. It symbolizes the blending of East and West and suggests that one can go beyond the ordinary by going East and Beyond. All items in the shop are selected by the owners personally. The Arnolds make several trips to Asia each year and import their purchases by container load.
East & Beyond, Ltd. is a three-floor gallery fifteen minutes from downtown Washington, D.C. It is located in the heart of McLean, VA just off the intersection of Chain Bridge road and Old Dominion Drive.
The Arnolds buy furniture in a raw state, i.e., before restoration. This insures that the items were not made to order in the back yard. Chinese items are shipped from mainland China, after restoration by artisans trained to meet European restoration standards. Japanese furniture is restored by Joe himself. All items are refurbished, to maintain the heritage of the piece. While Joe handles the furniture side, Mary is responsible for textiles, porcelain, and other decorative objects. She is also the shop's decorator, insuring that every item is artistically displayed. The result is a relaxed atmosphere in which to peruse one of the East Coast's finest selections of Asian antiques.
