Tell Lew he should read our forum before he makes up stories in his column.

Sorry for the delay I had to do some catch-up with my business.

What did I learn from the LGM seminar?

We learned about carpet construction & industry statistics, carpet fibers & their characteristics and yarn manufacturing, all backed up with a mill tour.

We also learned about pre-dyeing and post-dyeing all backed up with a mill tour. We also learned about the different tufting processes, backed up with two different mill tours. We also went on a testing Lab tour that was very interesting. Then we talked about modular carpet & installation, adhesives, maintenance and so much more.

The mill tours were very helpful to me. As you all know, my big brother is an engineer that worked in the manufacturing process from start to finish and the pictures in my mind will help me visualize his stories.

As I said before, all of the instructors were friendly and very knowledgeable and I highly recommend going to this seminar.

Was there a good group there?

Yes, it was a full house. There was a good mix of people. There were engineers, chemists, store owners, customer service people, customers who had problems and union workers. Oh yea, and me the carpet installer.

I would like to thank the FloorBiz and LGM for having me. I had the time of my life.

All yea Lew, I will bring up some old Threads of my work, call me anytime.

Learning with others is always a good thing because you never know what will be said and that one thing could effected how we look at things. The one thing that I hate the most is drawing a blank when you have so many questions you would like to ask.

Here's a few I would like to know.

After the Extrusion process what type of test are perform on the fiber?

What are the different results will you see if the heat is to high or to low?

Darin,
for us in the field, there are no ASTM approved field tests,
the only ones I know of are tensile and spin finish that the mills
do, and today I called and asked a mill tech I know, who has been
working for the mills since the early 70s, what test they do you
described, tensile testing and only, ver-ver-ver-very rare they do
that test, like, 99.9% of the time on 99.9% of fiber, no.

so, educate me, is there another? I want to learn,
then, relate to us what we as installers and inspectors will need to
know such as performance characteristics and appearance,

I got to set in a seminar today that was showing and talking about the new things that will be in the new ANSI Standards coming out at the end of the year. He had one that was in print but could not give any out yet. We get to start learning more things for they have added and are touching on things that have change since the last one ( lots have changed since 1988 )

the new ANSI ceramic will be out soon I hear,
they have included the CTDA V 0-4 scale as a standard,
that will throw a lot of dung at some inspections/inspectors who
now are doing ceramic, and don't know about the scale,,,,it will get
interesting in about a year,
takes that long for it to "get around",
