Static Dissipating Tiles

I have a customer complaining that their static dissipating tiles are not working and they have been shocked several times while working at their computers when touching the keyboard. I am going to go out and look at this today or tomorrow, mostly as a fact finding mission. What should i be looking for?

It seems odd that a plastic keyboard would cause a shock. I've never been shocked by my keyboard. They told me over the phone that their electrician has checked the ground and it is in place and working. I checked our store records that indicate we did install the correct product. Any ideas would be helpful.

Hey Scott, you could try rubbing your feet on the ground and try to sock someone if you sock them then there is something definitely wrong with the carpet. Some of the others here will be able to help you better than me. I'm just a installer.

I should have stated this is vct. But i went and checked it out today. Ends up that the wrong vct was installed. Just standard vct. The correct product was ordered according to the records but not installed obviously.

I'll try socking people on the next job. Smile I don't know how far it will get me but maybe good for getting out frustrations.

Is there a requirement for proper footwear to be wore on static dissipating tiles?

Is it not a combination of footwear and static dissipating tiles that makes them one?

Thank you for your help Scott. Wink

Wool socks are the preferred footwear on floors.

I didn't realizes there were so many different things that could cause the same shock effect even if the floor is done right. It could be many things like shoes, sweat, hand lotion, and so much more.

They have a online course and other course here if anyone is interested.

If you are dealing with carpet and the RH is to low in the area it will cause you to get shocked just by walking accross the carpet.
Have had people call and say the where getting shocked had them put in a humitiyer and it took care of the problem.

Sorry I have not posted just got back from surfaces.

Years ago, and I think it is still in the carpet, you could see a thin black fiber that was suppose to stop shocks, a carbon anti-
static fiber.
Sometimes, for some unknown reason, more of the black fibers would be inserted into the tufts or yarn during the spinning.
There would be complaints of black spots in the carpet that were those black carbon fibers.

I have not heard of any of those types of complaints for years. I know they still happen because I am sure they still have the
anti-static fibers but I am wondering if they are not using some other type than carbon or maybe, they figured out how to
dye the carbon fiber???? anyone know?

Back many years ago, in the old computer rooms that were so tightly environmentally controlled, with the big old machines
taking up entire walls, we use to put a wire, developed/made just for computer rooms, under the tiles and the wires would
flash up the walls a short distance. Some rooms, to the ceilings. They also controlled the computer rooms environment
hoping to prevent electrical shocks. There were reported cases of it bringing down entire systems of companies and the govt.

Things sure have changed a lot, haven't they?

The was a down year as far as people being there, most of the people that did not come was the tire kickers. Most of the vendors I talked to said that their sales were close to last years so they were happy. I would not be surprised if it was down numbers wish by 50%. What i was finding is companys that would normally bring 2 to 3 people only brought 1 to 2 . Not alot of new carpet tools but there was some neat wood and heat welding new tools that came out, also some neat ceramic tools. Some good traning and semianars with some goog info.

That was my impression this year too. As a booth cruiser it was nice to have more room to move around and almost no lines at the food areas. A couple of the bigger vendors stated to me that sales were about the same.

Kool Glide was giving away an KG everyday. I tried for that twice but no luck.

I was in college taking Computer Science long time ago when they were the size of a room. Had those cards with holes punched in them. What were they called?
Anyway, the dang thing kept breaking down all the time so I thought...these dum things will never be worth a hoot! Smile
So I switched classes to something else.

Used to run into static all the time on carpoet jobs as we regularly have very low Rh. Had the people spray watered down fabric softener around the rooms. Works great.
