Keene, N.H.—Trikeenan Tileworks has purchased a 45,000-sq.-ft. tile manufacturing facility in Hornell, N.Y., to produce its new line of Modulus flooring.

The company will maintain its other factory in West Swanzey, N.H., where it will continue to produce many of Trikeenan’s smaller handmade field and decorative tiles and trim, as well as its branded Elementals collection.

The new facility is already equipped with state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment which is allowing the company to immediately begin production of the new line in order to have it ready for display at booth—3227—at Coverings in Orlando, Fla., April 4 to 7.

A spokesperson for the company said the New York facility was left unused and in excellent condition by its previous owner who had imported new equipment prior to closing the doors because of financial reasons.

The timing was perfect, said owners Kristin and Stephen Powers. “Put simply, we had the good fortune to outgrow our current space and the purchase of this facility enables us to meet demand. It also allows us to bring mid-priced artisan lines to the market, such as Modulus. This will make Trikeenan accessible to a larger customer base.”

They added the company has been gaining a great deal of attention lately among designers, homeowners and the industry. In fact, last year, it was awarded Best In show for booths under 500 square feet at Coverings, it was selected for use in “This Old House,” and was featured on HGTV’s “I Want That” and Bob Vila’s “Home Again,” not to mention numerous national architecture and design publications. And with the new production plant, “people are about to see some exciting new things.”

Modulus is the first example. It differs from Trikeenan’s other products in that it not only has its own unique palette of 25 glaze colors, it will be offered in sizes and shapes not found in the other lines, including several large formats.

“The idea behind it is to offer modern sophistication at a mid-range price,” noted Stephen. “The line is simple but refined and is designed to be uncomplicated and very flexible. The colors coordinate with our other glazes so it integrates with Trikeenan’s field and Elemental collections as well as our Decorative Glass Windows (glass-fused ceramic) and trim lines.

He added the line will give the company the ability to enter new markets. “We expect it to work well for large scale commercial and hospitality projects, bringing the handmade look without the high price tag.

“With Modulus,” Powers continued, “the pricing will make us a strong contender for larger square footage needs.”
