New York—
Solutia and the 2005 Doc competition winners were favored with the last of the season’s warm weather as the group gathered for its annual awards luncheon. The competition, now in its 17th year, recognizes outstanding achievement in contract projects that integrate color, space, form, function and materials, including carpet made with Solutia Ultron nylon 6,6 fiber.
The award, considered to be one of the A&D community’s premier benchmarks for success, was given to four design firms, three of which are based in Chicago. Also announced were the 2005 winners for Product Design, awarded to carpet mills for outstanding achievement in carpet design.
“Solutia is pleased to recognize these talented individuals and firms for their creativity in design and color along with their masterful execution of these projects,”
Kaye Gosline, director of contract fibers for Solutia, told guests. “We are proud to have the family of Ultron fiber products associated with these design professionals.”
The Doc competition is named to honor a true pioneer and an inspirational leader in the contract interior design industry, Robert F. Docherty, also known as “Doc.” Much of Doc’s 30-year career at Solutia was focused on the contract market. He was among the first in the industry to recognize the important role of the interior designer, establishing relationships with professional organizations such as ASID and IIDA (formerly IBD, ISID and CFID). He pioneered the use of broadloom in both educational and healthcare segments.
Doc funded the research which resulted in the first use of carpet in patient care areas and was instrumental in founding the specifier’s continuing education program conducted at Solutia’s manufacturing facilities. The success enjoyed by Solutia today is in large part due to the relationships Doc began building in the 1960s. “Doc’s vision for contract interiors and passion for leading-edge design continues to thrive through the Doc competition, and our celebration of the winners,” said Gosline.
The award-winning projects will be featured in Solutia’s 2006 national advertising campaign, she added. Each firm also received an original Doc crystal sculpture by Frabel as well as a cash prize. The 2005 Doc award winners are as follows:
