Amy Helfand's 'This Moment' Area Rug
(May 2012 - New York, NY) Brooklyn-based artist Amy Helfand has a knack for taking the ordinary and turning it into the extraordinary. This Moment, her latest rug collection does just that. In its simplest form, the collection of hand-knotted designs features botanical motifs and natural topographies. Typical of her work, the intertwined and particularly tangled layers transform each rug into an interior art form.

Inspired by photographs, books, field guides and nature, each tiny detail originates as a drawing. Helfand then layers her sketches to create fantastical, abstract arrangements rooted in landscape. “There’s a purposeful, untamed quality about the pieces in ‘This Moment,’” says Helfand. “I am interested in exploring how we locate ourselves in and our relationship with the natural world. These pieces are somewhat like wildernesses of my own making,” she added.

Adding yet another dimension to her offerings, “This Moment” consists of three unique compositions:

• As Above, So Below 3’ x 3.75’, 100% Chinese silk, hand-knotted at 300 knots/inch

• Intention is Everything 5’ x 7’, Tibetan wool/Chinese silk, hand-knotted at 150 knots/inch

• This Moment 7’ x 7’, Tibetan wool/Chinese silk, hand-knotted at 150 knots/inch

Each rug is hand-knotted in Nepal using the highest quality Tibetan wools and Chinese silks. They are hand- carded, hand-spun and pot-dyed in small batches. Pairing lanolin-rich wool with sparkly silk gives the rugs amazing softness underfoot and unique visual depth. The pieces in the This Moment collection are ideal for both residential and commercial spaces.

All of Helfand’s rugs are made to order in custom sizes and colors. She is deeply committed to the values of GoodWeave, and her membership ensures that no child labor is used in the production of her work.
