GRAND RAPIDS, MICH.—Workers at Scott Group Custom Carpets have been “bursting at the seams” with the knowledge the magnificent 23 x 30-foot oval rug they’d been working on was destined for the Oval Office.
Made from 100% wool the rug features the Presidential Seal in a center medallion and a border decorated with President Obama’s handpicked quotes from former presidents as well as the Rev. Martin Luther King.
Tim Hill, vice president of operations, said it features 48 individual yarn colors and is hand-tufted using single-yarn tufting guns on a cotton backing. Scott Group, which donated the rug, got the go-ahead to make it from Los Angeles designer
Michael Smith. It took 30 of the company’s 140 employees approximately 570 labor hours to complete.
Founded in 1969, the Scott Group makes ultra high-end luxury carpets for customers all over the world, including the private aviation, luxury marine, and residential and corporate interiors markets.
Hill said the custom rug maker has also made the Oval Office rug for President Clinton and rugs for the White House State Dining Room.
