The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council is pleased to announce the jury for the 2010 Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards. The jury is comprised of a diverse group of building experts whose commitment to excellence is longstanding and well documented. Our esteemed jury includes: Stephen T. Ayers, AIA, LEED AP , Nancy Clanton, PE, IALD, FIES, LC LEED AP, Deane M. Evans, FAIA, and Karle Kennett. This year's Awards program is chaired by SBIC member Mr. Gregg Ander, FAIA.
The Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards program is open to all and offers two entry categories, High-Performance Buildings and High-Performance Initiatives. Both categories will be evaluated based on the successful application of the whole building approach and on energy and environmental considerations. Winners will be invited to speak at a Capitol Hill briefing as well as a special session hosted by Catholic University's School of Architecture and Planning. Winning entries will be posted on the Whole Building Design Guide and on SBIC's web site.
About the jurors:Stephen T. Ayers, AIA, LEED AP
Architect of the Capitol
On February 24, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Mr. Ayers to serve as the 11th Architect of the Capitol (AOC). Mr. Ayers was confirmed by unanimous consent by the U.S. Senate On May 12, 2010, for a ten-year term. Mr. Ayers is responsible for the facilities maintenance and operation of the historic Capitol Building, the care and improvement of more than 450 acres of Capitol grounds, and the operation and maintenance of 16.5 million square feet of buildings within the Capitol complex. Mr. Ayers also serves as Acting Director of the U.S. Botanic Garden and the National Garden under the Joint Committee on the Library. Under Mr. Ayers' leadership, the AOC has, through a variety of initiatives, reduced carbon emissions, improved energy efficiency, and implemented sustainable design practices throughout the Capitol complex. The Office of the AOC has approximately 2,600 employees and an annual budget of nearly $600 million. Mr. Ayers completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Architecture at the University of Maryland and received his Master's of Science degree in Systems Management from the University of Southern California.
Nancy Clanton, PE, IALD, FIES, LC, LEED AP
Nancy E. Clanton is founder and President of Clanton & Associates, a lighting design firm specializing in sustainable design. Nancy is chairperson of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) Outdoor Environmental Lighting Committee, Mesopic Committee and Model Lighting Ordinance Task Force, is a past member of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Lighting Designers and the IESNA board of directors. Nancy is currently on the USGBC LEED Environmental Quality Technical Advisory Group. Nancy was lighting group leader for "Greening of the White House". Nancy was invited to lead the Lighting Group by the mayors of Seoul, Korea and Toronto, Canada at the C40 Summit in Seoul Korea. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree (Architectural Engineering, Illumination Emphasis) from the University of Colorado, Boulder and is a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Colorado and Oregon.
DEANE M. EVANS, FAIA
Center for Building Knowledge
New Jersey Institute of Technology
Mr. Evans is a registered architect and currently directs the Center for Building Knowledge (CBK) at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He has over 30 years experience - in both the private and public sectors - in architectural design, construction technology and building performance. He is the founding director of the Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. In his current position, Mr. Evans directs CBK a multi-disciplinary research and technical assistance center focused on improving the performance of buildings and communities. He is increasingly involved with the creation and dissemination of online education, with a particular emphasis on energy efficient, sustainable building design and construction practices. Mr. Evans is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects and currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council. He has a B.A. from Yale University and an M.Arch. from Columbia.
EARLE KENNETT

National Institute of Building Sciences
As Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the National Institute of Building Sciences Earle Kennett has managed and directed hundreds of projects for federal agencies in architecture and engineering research and science. He presently directs all technical programs at the Institute and including contracts with the Department of Veterans Affairs, NASA, Department of Energy; Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Department of Defense, the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, the Army Corps of Engineers, the Air Force, the Department of Homeland Security and the General Services Administration. Before coming to NIBS Mr. Kennett was Administrator for Research at AIA, where he also managed various large and complex building research projects including managing the development of the energy professional development program for the organization, which was the largest individual continuing education program the AIA had embarked upon.
Gregg D. Ander, FAIA
Chief Architect of Southern California Edison
Gregg D. Ander, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA), is the Chief Architect of Southern California Edison. Gregg was the Executive Producer of six environmentally-focused television programs for NBC, CBS, and PBS. One program, "Greener Buildings/Bluer Skies," won a 2006 Emmy award. Mr. Ander is a member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), Illuminating Engineering Society of North American (IESNA), American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and serves on the Board of Directors of the Sustainable Building Industry Council (SBIC), the New Buildings Institute (NBI), the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS), and the California Commissioning Collaborative (CCC). Gregg has authored over 70 technical and design-related articles and has won awards for various energy-related projects from AIA, ASHRAE, Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. In addition, Gregg has participated in numerous sustainability charrettes for residential, retail, K-12 schools, offices, and the greening of the White House and Old Executive Office buildings. He is the author of the book, "Daylighting Performance and Design," published by John Wiley & Sons (second edition).
