Pergo, the inventor and leading manufacturer of laminate flooring, has successfully defended its European patent EP1242702 in the European Patent Office. The patent concerns the manufacturing of flooring panels with a digitally-printed design that is applied directly to the core of the carrier.

A claim was made against the flooring manufacturer’s patent for complete revocation. In the verbal actions before the Board of Appeal – the final level of jurisdiction before the European Patent Office – the application for the revocation was successfully defended. The Board of Appeal thereby confirmed the decision by the appeals department and regards the patent – with some additional minor modifications – as entirely capable of being protected.

The decision by the European Patents Office reinforces Pergo’s excellent position in the field of digital printing and flooring surface design.
