An industry sustainability assessment standard for resilient flooring is targeted to be published this spring. Over the last several years, the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) and a committee of regulators, health officials, end users and producers have been hard at work on this standard with NSF and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Resilient flooring is one of the few interior product categories that have developed a sustainability standard. It’s an important indicator of environmental impacts and helps specifiers and purchasers weigh the relative attributes of one resilient flooring product versus another.

We in the resilient flooring industry think it’s important to be on the leading edge of the move toward sustainability assessments. Architects, designers, building owners and facility managers are requesting all available data about the environmental impacts of products they specify. Consumers are also becoming more concerned about the health and safety of products they bring into their homes. It’s important for floor covering retailers, contractors and distributors to provide reliable third-party information and be able to explain it to customers.
