Brockie celebrates Accu-Cut’s 20th

TAVARES, FLA.—The platinum anniversary of a company is a major milestone in any day or age, particularly in times of economic uncertainty. Brockie International, producer of Accu-Cut custom floor covering cutting equipment has excelled through its first 20 years and has positioned itself as a leader in the industry.

Founded in 1990, the company grew in response to a need for better cutting equipment, said Scott Brockie, president and CEO, who began in the industry as a sales representative for a large carpet manufacturer. “There had to be a better way for flooring retailers to measure and cut their orders, rather than having two people crawl around with a tape measure and razor knife.” The initial machine prototypes were well received and several models now make up the company’s offerings.

Positioning the company for success in the changing economic environment of the early ’90s meant selling the equipment to big box home centers as well as to the specialty dealer. In addition to individual retailers, Brockie International counts Home Depot, Abbey Carpet, Flooring America/ Carpet One, GCO Carpet Outlets, Stone Mountain Carpet Mills, Shaw Industries and CarpetsPlus of America among its customers.

Retailers have spoken highly of Accu-cut machines. Jim Cherry of the Carpet Coop in Simi Valley, Calif., has been using the same machine since it was purchased in 1991. An experienced retailer for 39 years, Cherry said, “I couldn’t ask for anything better. The machine just might outlive me.”

The newer machines have come a long way since the initial prototypes, Brockie explained. The new vinyl and carpet cutting machines have capabilities to sync with flooring software programs from RFMS, Rollmaster and QFloors, with plans for future integration in the works. Carrying out the cutting process with these programs, retailers can update inventory, print and scan roll tags, generate inventory reports and eliminate waste from inaccurate cuts.

With the economic downturn, the company has expanded its market into countries that haven’t been as negatively affected such as Canada, Australia and the U.K. Customers also show interest in the newer technology available and want to take advantage of the tax incentives the governments is offering for capital cost equipment.

“We see the market for us rapidly increasing in 2010 and for years to come,” Brockie concluded.
