KORTRIJK, BELGIUM—Pierre Lano spent his entire career in the eponymous company founded by his father and in his more than four decades at the helm, he made it one of the most successful in all of Europe. He was devoted to the family business but always managed to be politically active and serve the community in elected office. He was mayor of his town and also was a member of its governing body, a former VLD MP and manager. He gained the respect and admiration of townspeople and colleagues for his caring, compassion and commitment.
Lano died on Dec. 9 at the age of 65. He was born Aug. 23, 1944, and after completing his education he joined Lano Carpets. He learned all aspects of the business and eventually became its chief executive officer. He was defined by his inexhaustible energy, his passion for people and his boundless generosity. He was always a socially engaged entrepreneur, in his community and in his industry.
He pursued diverse niche markets, where quality and service are imperative. It was under his leadership that Lano Carpets became a major player in the industry. He established relationships in the United States and for a time maintained a presence at the Atlanta Rug Market. He attended most of the Atlanta markets and was a fixture at Surfaces.
In 2009, Lano retired from daily management of the company but remained active in determining the strategy of Lano. Together with the management team, he responded to the global fiscal crisis through a strategic repositioning that started early in 2009. That carefully planned approach is now yielding results and the company has returned to a stable and profitable state.
Peter Spirer, former chairman of Horizon Industries and longtime friend, said: “I loved his energy, his humor, his worldliness, his consideration and his service to his electorate. He led an active, meaningful life; he helped people in need and provided for thousands of associates at Lano. I miss him already.”
Elke Arora, Floor Covering News’ foreign correspondent stationed in Germany, said, “Pierre Lano was a kind and considerate person. Losing him at this time is particularly sad.”
Lano is survived by his wife, Myriam, and sons David and Joe.
