JOHNSON CITY, TENN—Mullican Flooring is extending its Green Haven line of FSC Pure hardwood to engineered flooring. The company at Surfaces will launch 10 SKUs of domestic species—such as oak, hickory and maple—and 10 exotics including Brazilian cherry and tigerwood.
Earlier this year, Mullican became the first U.S. manufacturer to offer a solid domestic FSC-Pure product (
FCNews Aug. 3/10), meaning the flooring is made entirely of wood originating from FSC-certified forests. According to Brian Greenwell, vice president of sales and marketing, the solid collection has received “tremendous” interest from architects and designers seeking to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification requirements, which include using a minimum of 50% FSC-certified wood-based materials and products. “We also had consumers waiting for the product because they are willing to pay for a green story. And FSC-Pure is as green as it gets.”
Greenwell noted that Green Haven Engineered completes the FSC-Pure line and positions the company as a leader in FSC-certified products, something that cannot be underestimated. “We believe the majority of flooring specifications will be green going forward. All government and the majority of all commercial jobs are green. It’s the next ticket to the ballgame if you want to earn LEED certification.”
Green Haven Engineered is 1/2-inch thick and carries a 3-year commercial and 25-year residential warranty. The line retails between $5.49 and $6.99 to the consumer, product only, which is a 20% premium over non-Pure product. As well, Greenwell noted Mullican is working on a new finish that will further improve Green Haven’s durability. Product will be available Feb. 1.
FSC is an international organization that promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests. To achieve FSC certification, a product and its manufacturer must meet FSC managerial, environmental and social standards as evaluated and certified by accredited, independent third parties.
“The new FSC-certified engineered products are the next step for us. We have worked very hard to jump through all the necessary hoops to give consumers and builders flooring products that meet strict sustainability requirements,” Greenwell says. “We plan to continue to develop these types of products to comply with the highest standards of environmental stewardship.”
