NEW YORK—What makes hand-woven rugs from India as affordable as they are desirable? What’s the difference between hand-knotted, hand-tufted and flat woven rugs? The answers to these and other questions can be found in a free brochure, “A Shopper’s Guide to Hand-Woven Rugs from India,” that can be downloaded at RugsOfIndia.in.
In addition to information about the variety of rug styles available, the guide explains why hand-woven area rugs produced in India are within the reach of today’s budget-minded consumers. The guide and site are part of a new nationwide educational and marketing campaign to heighten awareness of hand-woven rugs from India, sponsored by the country’s nonprofit Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC), in cooperation with the U.S.-based nonprofit, Oriental Rug Importers Association (ORIA).
According to Raja Sharma, CEPC’s vice chairman, “The objective of the Rugs Of India campaign is twofold: to distinguish the unique craftsmanship of hand-woven Indian rugs from other hand- and machine-made rugs, and to make the process of shopping for a handwoven Indian rug as easy as possible.”
ORIA president Michael Harounian added, “Whether furnishing a first home or doing a room makeover, the ‘Shopper’s Guide,’ together with the Rugs of India Web site will help steer consumers to the quality Indian rugs that match their design preferences, space and function requirements, and budgets.”
