Announcing the Jury for SBIC's 2009 Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards - Program Deadline: October 30, 2009

The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council is pleased to announce the jury for the 2009 Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards. The jury is comprised of industry members whose commitment to excellence is longstanding and well documented. Our esteemed jury includes: Ms. Caroline Alderson, Mr. Gary Bailey, AIA, Mr. Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA, Peter A. Stratton, and Ujjval K. Vyas, Ph.D., J.D. This year's Awards program is chaired by SBIC member Mr. Gregg Ander, FAIA.

Caroline Alderson directs the business strategy and technical innovation programs of the General Services Administration's Center for Historic Buildings. The Center provides guidance for the use and care of over 400 historic buildings providing more than 53 million square feet of space for federal employees throughout the nation. In this capacity, Alderson has served as an outspoken advocate for design standards and technical approaches that reduce the cost and intrusiveness of keeping historic buildings safe, functional, and architecturally intact. A regular lecturer on preservation technology and strategies for keeping historic buildings viable, Alderson has written extensive policy guidance supporting historic building reuse, along with technical publications on fire safety, security, mechanical systems, and other subjects.

Gary Bailey, AIA has been an officer and owner of the Raleigh, North Carolina, based firm Innovative Design, Inc. for 27 years. He opened the branch office in Las Vegas in 1999. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, the American Solar Energy Society (Past Director for Passive Architecture and Construction Division), the International Solar Energy Society, and the North Carolina Solar Energy Association. He was a Past Chairman for the North Carolina AIA Energy Committee. Mr. Bailey currently serves as Secretary of the Board of SBIC and serves on the boards of the Governor's Energy Conservation Corps for the State of North Carolina, the North Carolina State Facilities Energy Task Force, and the Governor's Task Force for Energy Efficient Public Buildings. Mr. Bailey holds a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University.

Henry L. Green, Hon. AIA was appointed President and CEO of the National Institute of Building Sciences in August of 2008. Prior to this appointment he served as Executive Director of the Bureau of Construction Codes in the Michigan Department of Labor for more than 19 years. Mr. Green was a founding member of the International Code Council Board of Directors completing a term as President in 2006. He served as a member of the National Institute of Building Sciences Board of Directors for eight years, completing a term as Chairman in 2003. Mr. Green was a member of the Building Officials and Code Administrators (BOCA) Board of Directors for ten years, holding the position of President in 1997. He was named "1990 Man of the Year" by the Automatic Fire Alarm Association (AFFA), and received the "Distinguished Service to Government" award from the Building Industry Association of Southeastern Michigan in 1998. He received the Walker S. Lee Award in recognition of outstanding service to BOCA International in 1999. In 2005, he was recognized by the United States House of Representatives for his work as "...a tireless advocate for building safety and enforcement of codes" and was named an Honorary Architect by the American Institute of Architects in 2008.

Peter A. Stratton is a Senior Associate with Steven Winter Associates, Inc., where he manages accessibility compliance consulting services provided to public and private clients, including one of the top-ten largest public housing authorities and the largest private multi-family residential rental real estate firm in the U.S. Mr. Stratton provides consulting expertise to the U.S. Department of Justice and to other private and non-profit law firms. He routinely manages compliance consulting services, including plan reviews and construction administration, to developers, architects, and builders, nationwide. He is the author of A Basic Guide to Fair Housing Accessibility - Everything Architects and Builders Need to Know about the Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., June 2001.

Ujjval Vyas, Ph.D., J.D. is principal of Alberti Group, an interdisciplinary consultancy focused on emerging issues in the building arena. He is also a practicing attorney and is President of the Board of Directors of Solon Institute for Building Performance and Policy, a recently formed think-tank that provides critical analysis of legal, technical, and economic issues influencing building performance and policy. He has previously taught architectural history, theory and design and currently teaches in the Real Estate Department at DePaul University and at the Chicago-Kent College of Law. He has lectured and published extensively on topics related to sustainability and green building including risk management, policy, and legal and technical concerns.

Gregg D. Ander, FAIA is the Chief Architect for Southern California Edison. He was the Executive Producer of six environmentally focused television programs for NBC, CBS, and PBS, one of which, "Greener Buildings/Bluer Skies," won a 2006 Emmy award. Mr. Ander has commissioned a wide variety of building and lighting research efforts including, field studies for photocontrols, Light-Emitting Diode (LED) performance assessments, and remote connectivity for demand response. He is the author of the book Daylighting Performance and Design, published by John Wiley & Sons. Mr. Ander serves on the Board of Directors of SBIC, the New Buildings Institute, the Collaborative for High Performance Schools, and the California Commissioning Collaborative.

The Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards program is open to all and offers two entry categories, High-Performance Initiatives and High-Performance Buildings. Both categories will be evaluated based on the successful application of the whole building approach and on energy and environmental considerations. Winners will be invited to speak at a reception held in conjunction with a Capitol Hill briefing in early 2010. Winning entries will be posted on the Whole Building Design Guide and on SBIC's Web site and newsletter. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for the program and awards reception.
