Mohawk wood brands first to achieve engineered FloorScore certification
Article Number: 4557

DALLAS—Mohawk, Columbia and Century were recently the first brands to receive FloorScore certification for their engineered hardwood products, said Mohawk Industries, producer of all three. “Being the first in our industry to secure FloorScore certification is proof that our ongoing Mohawk GreenWorks’ deliberate focus to provide products that are both stylish and environmentally sound puts us at the top of our industry,” explained Dewavai Buchanan, vice president of hardwood flooring for Unilin—a Mohawk company.

“This allows retailers and distributors to objectively tell customers the flooring not only exceeds the most stringent formaldehyde emission standards in the world for composite wood products,” he added, “it has passed tests for a total of 78 volatile organic compounds.”

FloorScore certification was developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute, and Scientific Certification Systems in accordance with California’s CA01350 and is recognized as one of the most controlled IAQ standards in the country. Mohawk, Columbia and Century engineered products made with PureBond—a patented formaldehyde-free engineered flooring technology, which Mohawk began using in November 2008—are in compliance with indoor air standards and fall under the certification.

“From this time forward, all engineered hardwood products introduced under any of the three brands will use PureBond and will thus, be FloorScore certified, bearing the FloorScore certification label,” Buchanan said.

He also noted the FloorScore certification signifies the brands meet criteria required by other well-respected organizations such as USGBC, Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and the Green Guide for Health Care.

“Our use of PureBond formaldehyde-free technology has been key in securing both FloorScore and our other recent achievements of both CARB phase 1 and 2,” Buchanan said. “Receiving the FloorScore certification for all of our wood brands is just one example of how we are continuously working to maintain our leadership position on environmentally responsible issues.”
