Washington, D.C. - The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) is pleased to announce the election of new officers for 2009-2010. SBIC's Executive Committee includes: John J. Sullivan, Jr., PE., M.ASCE, Portland Cement Association; Deane M. Evans, FAIA, Center for Architecture and Building Science Research; Gary Bailey, AIA, Innovative Design, Inc.; Michael A. Bell, CGP, National Association of Home Builders; Leon Chatelain, III, AIA, LEED AP, Chatelain Architects; Kurt P. Riesenberg, Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance; and Maria Viteri, AIA, LEED AP, International Masonry Institute.

"The time has never been better nor the need greater for the American public, building owners, and the federal government to fully understand and embrace high-performance buildings as a major solution to global warming and a means of achieving greater productivity," said John Sullivan, newly elected Chairman of the Council. "SBIC has been a national leader in defining the concept of high-performance buildings for nearly 30 years, evolving from an initial focus on energy use to a broader focus on the full range of sustainable and green strategies. The Council now helps the industry create facilities that integrate a more comprehensive range of design objectives and go Beyond Green. I am pleased to be asked to lead this effort."

John J. Sullivan, Jr., PE., M.ASCE, Chairman, is the Director of Federal Infrastructure Markets at the Portland Cement Association (PCA), a Founding Member of SBIC. Sullivan previously chaired SBIC nearly 10 years ago during its evolution from the Passive Solar Industries Council to the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council. He championed the transition and provided valuable leadership and vision to the process. At PCA, his responsibilities include representing the interests of the cement industry before those federal agencies responsible for designing, constructing and maintaining engineered structures (buildings, bridges, transit), public works projects (water resources, hazardous waste treatment, soil cement/RCC pavements, RCC dams), and residential structures for government housing. John joined the cement industry in 1993 following a 23 year career in the US Navy as a Civil Engineer Corps officer. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the United States Naval Academy and a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering (cum laude) and a Master of Science degree in Public Works Administration from the University of Michigan. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of California and holds memberships in the American Society of Civil Engineers, Chi Epsilon and the Society of American Military Engineers.

Deane M. Evans, FAIA, Vice-Chair, directs the Center for Architecture and Building Science Research at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He is the principal author of SBIC's High-Performance School Buildings Resource and Strategy Guide, and was the curriculum content coordinator for a 25-module, online training course for architects on designing high-performance schools. He also established the New Jersey High-Performance Schools Information Center in cooperation with the New Jersey Schools Construction Corporation. He recently launched the High-Performance Schools Online Academy developed under a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Rebuild America program. Deane served on the U.S. Green Building Council's "LEED® for Schools" advisory committee and co-authored New Jersey's 21st Century Schools Design Manual. He has a B.A. from Yale University and an M.Arch. from Columbia University.

Gary Bailey, AIA, Secretary, has been an officer and owner of Innovative Design, Inc. in Raleigh, North Carolina for 26 years. He opened the branch office in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1999. Bailey is a member of the American Institute of Architects, the International Solar Energy Society, and the North Carolina Solar Energy Association. He has served as the Chairman of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Energy Committee and the Director of the Passive Architecture and Construction Division of the American Solar Energy Society. Gary currently serves on the Governor's Energy Conservation Corps (State of North Carolina), the North Carolina State Facilities Energy Task Force, and the Governor's Task Force for Energy Efficient Public Buildings. He holds a Bachelor of Architecture from North Carolina State University.

Michael A. Bell, CGP, Treasurer, represents NAHB and has more than 30 years of experience in residential development, design and building, and in marketing housing, products, and new technology. Prior to forming the bell company, a full-service consulting firm that specializes in building industry clients, he spent six years as the Senior Vice President and Managing Partner for Sumner Rider and Associates, an advertising, public relations, and public affairs company headquartered in New York. Before that, he was the Director of Energy and Technology Programs at the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). Michael is active in the Maryland-National Capital Building Industry Association, having served on numerous committees, the Board of Directors and also the MNCBIA Executive Committee. He was the 1994 recipient of the Joseph C. Rodgers Award for outstanding Associate Member. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the NAHB and serves on the NAHB Green Building Committee and the NAHB Green Building Conference Steering Committee. He is a member of the Urban Land Institute.

Leon Chatelain, III, AIA, LEED AP, At-Large Officer, is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design and is the Principal of Chatelain Architects, located in Washington, D.C. He has held several leadership positions within various organizations, including the Washington Chapter of the AIA, the National Easter Seals Society, and the Columbia Hospital for Women Foundation. In his 40 years of experience, he has designed projects including private and public education facilities, institutional and government buildings, and residential projects. Leon has received design awards from the American Institute of Architects Washington Chapter, American Association of School Administrators, Precast Concrete Institute, Masonry Institute, and Classical Architecture League.

Kurt Riesenberg, At-Large Officer, is the Executive Director of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Alliance (SPFA). In this role he provides leadership for activities of the association focusing upon promotion of high-performance roofing and insulation materials, energy efficiency, environmental stewardship, and quality in materials and application. SPFA represents the complete value chain in the SPF industry, with membership comprised of the largest multinational material and chemical manufacturers in the SPF arena, as well as key distributors, systems houses (blenders), and SPF wall insulation and roofing contractors. Kurt coordinates efforts among the association's technical committee, building envelope committee, code and ASTM committee, environmental stewardship and safety committee, and industry promotion committee, as well as its Board of Directors.

Maria Viteri, AIA, LEED AP, At-Large Officer, is National Director of Program Development for the International Masonry Institute (IMI) and has over 20 years experience in architectural design, construction administration, and marketing experience within the construction industry. Her architectural experience is healthcare focused and includes responsibilities as Project Manager and Owner's Representative. Within IMI, Maria leads IMI's Green Strategy and has delivered various presentations on design, energy efficient masonry construction, education, and material understanding. Maria is involved with contractor business development and architectural education, including leading IMI's Masonry Camp program. She is an instructor for IMI's Contractor College program and IMI's Instructor Certification Program. In 2003-2004, Maria served as guest curator/project manger with Stanley Tigerman, FAIA at the National Building Museum's exhibition on masonry design, "Masonry Variations." She maintains architectural registration in the state of Pennsylvania. Maria holds a Master of Architecture degree from Tulane University, Master of Business Administration, and a Master of Public & International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh.
