Donald Peake - Longtime Oregon flooring retailer, WFCA president

PORTLAND, ORE.—For decades he was known as Peake the Shade Man, mostly because he carried window treatments as well as floor coverings in his retail operation here. He was active in the industry and rapidly built a reputation as an innovator and a leader. In 1964, he was elected president of the Western Floor Covering Association, which evolved into the World Floor Covering Association. Donald Peake died in retirement here on Feb. 14. He was 91.

Born in Portland on Aug. 7, 1917, he attended Grant High School, the University of Washington and Oregon State University. When World War II erupted, Peake entered the Army and became a Captain in the 104th Infantry Division, the Timberwolves. He served in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, and was awarded four Purple Hearts, the Silver Star and the Bronze Star. After his honorable discharge from service, Peake decided to start his ownbusiness and founded Peake the Shade Man, a specialty store that enjoyed great success in its trading area and beyond.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 63 years, Marie; three daughters, Tracy Little, Nancy Peake-Hopkins and Sally Peake; a son, Charles; seven grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren, and sister, Justine Weatherford.
