DALTON—Shaw’s commitment to being a good environmental steward was rewarded with another honor last month. The California Integrated Waste Management board acknowledged the mill through its Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) for the fourth consecutive year.
WRAP is a 16-year-old program which publicly promotes businesses locally and statewide that implement environmental best practices for successful reduction of waste disposal in landfills.
Four of Shaw’s facilities in the state were honored. During 2007, Shaw diverted more than 11 million pounds of recyclables from the landfill, resulting in an estimated savings of $1,850,000.
“By incorporating waste reduction, reuse and recycling efforts into its daily business activities, Shaw is influencing the way business is done in California,” said Edward Reidhead, a WRAP board member.
Rick Ramirez, Shaw’s vice president of sustainability and environmental affairs, said sustainability fully defines the company’s business model, and initiatives such as waste reduction are one of many in Shaw Green Edge, the mill’s umbrella term, encompassing over 100 active environmental, social and economic initiatives.
