Dupont: What's in a name?

What is in a name? A fiber’s generic name describes the chemical family for polymer raw materials. It tells us little about the properties of fibers spun for the polymer. Polymers in the same family can have widely different properties that can overlap with or surpass the properties of polymers in other families.

When selecting carpet it is important to look at the properties of the fiber—inherent stain resistance, crush resistance and resilience; softness, durability and color—the reputation of the companies producing the polymer, fiber and carpet; and what stands behind the carpet: the warranty and manufacturer. Then make an informed decision.

There are many different types of polyester, each with its own set of performance attributes and uses.

DuPont Sorona renewably sourced polymer is a new material in the polyester family and with properties that, in many applications, surpass those of other polymers. An application has been submitted to the FTC requesting a new generic be assigned to this innovative polymer because of the many differences between it and traditional polyester. A new “temporary” generic, PTT001, has been assigned to this polymer by the FTC and a decision on the permanent generic name should be made soon.

DuPont Sorona, also known as 3GT, is a unique molecule with a very unique structure unlike traditional 2GT or PET polyester, the traditional polyester used in carpets. Sorona molecules have a magic “kink”—similar to a spring—that makes the fiber more crush resistant, resilient and durable, and easy to clean. Sorona offers a unique combination of attributes that overcome the limitations of both nylon and polyester by providing softness, rich colors, resilience, durability and permanent stain protection.

Traditional polyester carpet is made with 2GT or PET—a molecule know for decades with very limited properties. Permanent stain protection is inherent in the Sorona 3GT fiber; it’s not a topical application. Therefore, it won’t wear off or diminish after years of repeated cleanings.

Carpets made with Sorona 3GT dry quickly and are resistant to mold.

Polyesters come in many different forms and are used in a wide variety of applications and end uses. Although they all carry the “generic” name of polyester, each has a special set of performance attributes and benefits suitable for each specific end use.
