PATERSON, N.J.—Eva’s Village, a non-profit organization located here that strives to help the less fortunate, has a much more solid foundation from which to work, thanks to a comprehensive floor covering pro bono project by the INSTALL network.
The flooring professionals and instructors of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters’ (UBC) Local 29 and Local 2212, both part of the INSTALL program, worked on the job with project manager Railroad Construction, and contributing contractors M.E. Sabosik Associates and Re: Source New Jersey.
Getting the project off the ground was a challenge in prepping the floors of this late 1800s building. But following the prep, 500 square feet of material was installed in some very intricate patterns in three kitchens and the rear door foyer. All rooms received carpeting. The main entrance was done in linoleum with material donated by Forbo, an INSTALL partner.
In all, the project entailed about 1,500 square yards of glue-down carpet, 500 square feet of intricate patterned layout tile and 50 square yards of linoleum. Finally, as a surprise, the crew replicated the organization’s logo in the foyer.
“In light of everything we did, I thought giving a little more would be icing on the cake,” said Don Nelson, the UBC flooring instructor who helped coordinate the project. “I had talked to them about putting their logo in the foyer to give them something to remember us by.”
After getting the 15 logo colors, Nelson hand-cut the emblem and joined apprentices for its installation. “I hope they will enjoy the fruits of our labor for many years to come!”
Donors to the project included the New Jersey Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, which supplied instructors and apprenticeship time for the installation, carpet and delivery of the materials; M.E. Sabosik, led by INSTALL labor-management committee member Marty Murdoch, donated VCT and
Ardex patch at cost—a big help due to patching material needed to get the floors in acceptable condition to install resilient—Re:Source New Jersey, which also donated material such as carpet tile and adhesive, and Forbo.
