The opening highlight of the CFI Convention is the Leadership Conference sponsored by the World Floor Covering Association. This year, Mohawk University sponsors Sam Allman of Allman Consulting with the theme, “Success, It’s Your Choice.” The Allman style of motivation brings to the convention an opportunity for the members to look inward to develop long-term strategies for success. In his presentation, Allman will challenge the group to take inventory of their strengths and put them to work in today’s economy.

The Educational Workshop Sessions include:

• Flash Coving (hands-on) session by Tim Provence, Armstrong Industries presents techniques of heat welding for flash coving, including inside and outside corners.

• Rubber Products Skills Workshop by Dick Schmidt of Johnsonite introduces new techniques for rubber tile installations.

• The Substrate and Flooring Installation presented by Jeff Johnson of Mapei who shares problems and solutions that face flooring installations.

• Designing with Tile by Joe Cea of Congoleum provides a skills, hands-on workshop for the creation of innovative designs in tile.

Attendees also select a session from five workshops to attend. “Problems, Causes and Cures for Hardwood Installations” by Jon Namba; “Competing in the Commercial Marketplace,” by Rod Von Busch; “High Moisture VCT Installation – RH Test Probe Method ASTM F-2170,” by Tim Provence; “Natural Fibers Workshop” by P.J. Arthur and Fred Chastain and the “CFI Master-II Skills and Handsewing Preparation Workshop” moderated by Jerry Miller and presented by Tony Buckhardt, Lloyd Englebrecht, Alan Lagatore, Daris Mulkin, Charles Parsley and Robert Varden.

In four, 30-minutes sessions, the CFI Associate 15th Jacket Sponsors will present new products, installation specifications, answer questions and provide solutions to problems for each attendee. A highlight of the conference, this is an opportunity to be on the cutting-edge of product offerings and installation expertise.

The Success in Business workshop hosted by Jim Walker will include speakers from the membership who share their individual proven methods of success in the flooring installation business.

The Charles R. Gress Award and presentation of the 50+ jackets and 25+ year awards is scheduled for Friday morning at 8:15. Carol Wilkins of Hanley-Wood shares the latest offerings from Surfaces that benefit flooring installers.

Friday evening, the group travels to the Associate sponsored “FUN EVENING.” This is an exciting event where installer and associate members compete as teams to win the Associate prize for 2008.

Saturday presents the opportunity to complete the written portion of the CFI Master-II test, additional opportunities to participate in the Associate product presentations and the Installation Skills Workshops.

The event concludes on Saturday evening with the annual L. Fishman Chapter Award presented in memory of Pat Fell, former chairman of the CFI Chapter Committee; the annual contribution to the FCIF and Buckhardt Memorial Funds; convention address by D. Christopher Davis, President and CEO of the World Floor Covering Association; presentation of the new officers and members of the board of directors of CFI and the incoming CFI presidential address.
