Mannington Recognized for Environmental Stewardship
Article Number: 3251

Salem, NJ – May 13, 2008 – The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has recognized Mannington Mills for its exemplary efforts focusing on environmental responsibility. The Environmental Stewardship Program, developed by the NJDEP, publicly acknowledges the efforts of a few specific companies in the state whose practices routinely exceed requirements and regulations.

Mannington was one of three New Jersey companies praised for their achievements at a ceremony hosted by DEP Commissioner Lisa P. Jackson. “[These companies] are at the leading edge of a new approach to environmental protection,” she said. “It just makes better business sense and is better for the environment if companies adopt strategies that reduce environmental impacts in as many operational areas as possible.”

Mannington was also among the companies involved in the development of this progressive program. Dave Kitts, the company’s Vice President – Environment said, “Mannington has long been innovative when it comes to stewardship and environmental improvement. We were honored that the NJDEP sought our input in the early stages of developing this program and are certainly delighted that they have publicly acknowledged our beyond-compliance approach in this way.”

Under the stewardship guidelines, companies are evaluated by NJDEP on their overall environmental policies as well as other factors, such as: programs aimed at reducing emissions and greenhouse gases; conservation of water and energy; reduced hazardous waste; encouraging green building and construction; and requiring vendors to adopt strong environmental practices. It also looks at internal initiatives such as effective environmental management systems, and property and habitat enhancements.

Tom Davis, President and CEO of Mannington Mills said, “As a company, Mannington has long held a value to be a good steward of the environment. Recognition by one of the strictest environmental agencies in the country is something we are extremely proud of, and we will continue to work diligently to go above and beyond what’s required. From our perspective, ultimately it’s our actions that speak.”

Dave Kitts agrees. “We’re really at the point where green is becoming diluted and sounding so simple. The reality is that it’s very complex and there are many dynamic facets to stellar environmental performance. That’s why Mannington strives to look at this topic from a truly holistic perspective and work on continual improvement in every area.”
