NEWYORK—With 3.5 million visitors a year, the Empire State Building needs a floor that is durable, easy to look after, price appropriate and one that maintains its Art Deco design theme. For this busy environment, Jeter, Cook & Jepson Architects (JCJ) of Hartford, Conn., set about to create an interesting floor to honor its client’s requests, with
Centiva providing the product.
A multi-colored chevron floor design was achieved with Centiva’s Magics line. Bob Burling, JCJ’s principal, explained the company chose Magics in 12- and 18-inch tiles with a slate surface texture.
Magics, a homogeneous product, is one of the more durable flooring products on the market, Burling said. “We love the floor and the way it looks, even now, with some months and many thousands of feet that have trodden over it. The building’s staff loves the look and is learning it doesn’t require an unusual amount of daily maintenance.”
Centiva designed the floor’s logo especially for the Empire State Building using its state-of-the-art Ultrasonic Knife.
Burling concluded, “The overall aesthetic for the project was to build upon the rich art-deco history of the original building design while providing a new palette of color and material to act as a compliment to the storyline presented during the visitors’ experience.”
