WILMINGTON, Del. and DALTON, Ga. — March 18, 2008 —
Mohawk Industries, Inc. and the DuPont™ Sorona® business were recognized with a 2007 DuPont Sustainable Growth Excellence Award for the commercialization of Mohawk SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® renewably sourced polymer, a high performance residential carpet. The 2007 DuPont Sustainable Growth Award includes a $5,000 grant award, which will be donated by Mohawk and DuPont Sorona to the Conasauga River Alliance, an organization dedicated to the protection of the Conasauga River, the key water source for all Dalton, GA area manufacturers.
This check was presented to Frank Sagona, executive director of the Conasauga River Alliance at dinner in Atlanta on March 12, 2008. (see photo). The Conasauga River Alliance is a local, non-profit conservation group comprised of organizations, corporations, and citizens concerned with preserving the 90-mile Conasauga River. “The Conasauga River is an impressive community asset. The river boasts more species of native fish and the combined Colorado and Columbia Rivers and supports the flooring industry for two-thirds of the nation’s flooring. The Alliance will use this award to promote the river as a community asset through river cleanup projects, education programs in local schools and teacher workshops, and as host to visiting groups. We seek to re-connect people to their river”, said Frank Sagona, executive director of the Conasauga River Alliance.
In 2005, Mohawk and DuPont announced an exclusive partnership to provide a new line of residential carpet to the flooring industry. Under the terms of this agreement, DuPont agreed to provide its newest polymer technology to Mohawk who will manufacture and market it under the brand SmartStrand® with DuPont™ Sorona® polymer.
This residential carpet provides natural, built-in permanent stain resistance and exceptional durability coupled with advances in environmental stewardship because it displaces the need for petrochemical feedstocks for one of the polymer ingredients, using renewably sourced ingredients instead. An external, peer-reviewed Life Cycle Analysis documented that the production of Sorona® polymer requires 30 percent less energy and reduces carbon dioxide emissions 63 percent when compared to the production of an equal amount of nylon 6.
DuPont Vice President & Chief Sustainability Officer Linda Fisher said, “I am especially proud of this award recognition because it demonstrates not only what DuPont can do to create sustainable technologies for our company, but how those translate to real advantages for our customers. The thirteen award-winning projects for 2007, selected from over 57 nominations, will result in a total energy savings and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to removing 276,000 vehicles from the road, and reduced water use by over 800 million gallons per year.”
