Hakatai Enterprises Inc., importer and distributor of glass mosaic tile, was specified by the Lawrence Group architectural firm for inclusion in a custom renovation of a 1940’s home in Austin, Texas, which was one of 11 homes chosen to be featured in the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects annual AIA Austin Homes Tour. The 22nd annual AIA Austin Homes Tour, one of the most popular weekend events each fall in Central Texas, will be held on October 6 and 7, from noon to 6 p.m. each day.
Earl Swisher, lead architect for The Lawrence Group on the Alvisi residence renovation in the Tarrytown section of Austin, utilized 200 square feet of Hakatai’s Classic Series of mosaic glass tile in all three bathrooms, and an additional 35 square feet of Hakatai’s Aventurine Series semi-translucent glass tile for an elegant kitchen backsplash.
“The Alvisi residence bathrooms used standard ceramic tiles on the floors and walls,” Swisher said, “but where The Lawrence Group wanted to highlight specialty surfaces, Hakatai glass tile was used. We utilized their tile for the kitchen backsplash, free-standing privacy partitions in the showers, and bath tub niches. The high quality and complex nature of the ¾” x ¾” glass tiles perfectly complimented the clean geometry of the architectural elements that they surfaced. The final result is the striking overall impact on the quality of the space, rather than on the mere square footage of mosaic tile.”
Hakatai makes glass tile easy to view and purchase online at www.hakatai.com with an interactive, easy to navigate website. Using the online Custom Blend Tool on the website, The Lawrence Group created a blend of three colors, Classic Series’ Pastel Blue, Deep Blue and Ocean Blue, in equal quantities for a 60 square foot, free-standing privacy partition in the master bath.
For the second bath at the Alvisi residence, The Lawrence Group selected one of Hakatai’s Classic Series Standard Blends in Ocean Blue Blend, for three walls of a tub surround. Each mosaic sheet is mesh-back mounted on 1.15 square foot sheets. Hakatai offers 27 stocked standard blends in the Classic Series alone, as well as many other stocked blends in other mosaic series. For the guest bath, The Lawrence Group chose the Classic Series’ Emerald Blend for a 70 square foot free-standing shower screen wall.
The 35 square foot kitchen backsplash was clad with Hakatai’s semi-translucent Aventurine Series of ¾” x ¾” glass mosaics in the color Sage, which provided a modern elegance and earthen charm to the room. Aventurine is one of Hakatai’s newest lines and is characterized by its rich, nature inspired palette of earth-to-sky colors and is available in a variety of vibrant blend combinations.
