FCNews readers are constantly getting in touch with our columnists for advice concerning everything from claims/legal and financial issues to selling and maintenance. They are usually asking for an opinion on a particular subject. Sometimes, numerous readers ask a similar question or it is general enough to where other readers might be interested in it as well. When that happens, both question and response are presented in our “Ask A Columnist” segment.

The following question is from Ellie Reichenbach of Valley Carpet in Bay City, Mich., and was addressed to Kelly Kramer, author of the “Retail Education” column:

I was reviewing your “Facts & Uses for Carpet Fiber” section in your “Selling Clean” book. I am curious if your opinions of fiber have changed since your initial writing, specifically regarding newer polys, olefins, PETs and PTTs? Thank you for your time. Your opinions and advice, as always, are much appreciated.

Kelly responds:

“Selling Clean” (second addition) was written a few years back, and some things in fiber have changed. But what has not changed is how any fiber is constructed.

If the twist level is tight, the stitch rate is close and the tip definition is clean (plus it’s continuous filament), then most fibers will perform well.

Sure, there is a difference in how different fibers will perform under high traffic, but from what I’m seeing to date, most are doing great in stain resistance, resilience, wear and soil resistance.

Many years ago, fiber companies took chances. But, today, I feel they research much stronger before they put their millions/billions of dollars on the line.

The yarns I’m not convinced of yet are the soft nylons. Why bother? They are simply trying to make a polyester-like feel for a much higher cost.

As to PET and PTT—I’m sold. My only other advice is to invest in corn.

Thanks again for staying up on your education of what you do for a living.
