Robert Docherty
Marietta, Ga.—He was innovative and resolute, and he converted challenges into achievements. In his more than three decades with Monsanto, his initiatives extended the use of carpet into areas where it was previously prohibited. After his retirement, Robert Docherty remained in this city, where he lived for the past 28 years, and on Jan. 19, he passed away at the age of 84.

He was born and raised in Cornwall, N.Y., moved to Cold Spring, N.Y., and then to Marietta. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II and attained the rank of First Lieutenant before he was discharged. He attended Syracuse University and later joined Monsanto. During his tenure with the Chemical company, he founded the Monsanto Contract Group and was a major influence in getting carpet installed in schools, a significant accomplishment at the time. He also created the program which led to the use of carpeting in health care facilities and was personally responsible for the first installation of carpet in hospital patient areas. His 34-year career with the company left an indelible impression on it and the industry.

The Solutia “Doc” award was named for him and recognizes his “life-long and continued contributions to the contract carpet market.” The prestigious award, presented annually, honors the outstanding achievements of interior design professionals in the commercial building industry.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Patricia of White Plains, N.Y.; grandchildren, Caitlin and Robert, and a brother and sister-in-law, Edward M. and Barbara of Ashville, N.C.
