Mohawk promotes sustainability

CALHOUN, GA.—In its perpetual quest to care for Mother Nature, Mohawk created two new positions aimed to enhance sustainability management in the company. Bill Kilbride advanced to chief sustainability officer, in addition to continuing as president of the Mohawk Home division, and Jenny Cross was promoted to director of sustainability.

As chief sustainability officer, Kilbride will oversee marketing for GreenWorks—Mohawk’s umbrella name for its green operations— head a sustainability council comprised of all Mohawk’s business unit presidents and implement practices to reduce resource use—electricity, water, gas—and waste production. He started his career with Mohawk in 1993. As Mohawk Home president, he has overseen the division grow to the largest area rug and related textiles manufacturer in the U.S.

“Bill understands that what is good for the environment is good for our business, our customers and the consumer,” said Chris Wellborn, Mohawk’s president and COO. “He has driven many improvements in all our soft surface businesses to drive down waste and increase recycling, and we’re looking forward to his continued leadership in this area.”

Cross began in the flooring industry in 1992 and has been with Mohawk for the last five years, initially as the soft surface manager for residential flooring. Last year she was promoted to senior sustainability manager. She was also an influential player in bringing the company’s renewably sourced SmartStrand carpet to market.

As director of sustainability, Cross’ duties include managing communication around sustainability initiatives, finding ways to align existing green efforts, researching and defining best practices and the development of monitoring programs to ensure efficiency and effectiveness of the company’s environmental efforts.

Wellborn concluded, the combined efforts of Mohawk Industries with direction from Cross and Kilbride are designed to continue the company’s focus on the five R’s of the GreenWorks platforms—reduce, recover, reuse, renew and recycle.
