LATICRETE International, Inc, a global leader in the manufacturing of innovative systems for the installation of tile and stone, provided the entire system to waterproof and tile the podium deck pool at the new MGM Grand Macau. After the contractor first attempted to use a competitor’s cementitious waterproofing membrane that failed, LATICRETE was selected on the strength of LATICRETE® 9235 Waterproofing Membrane, as well as its global reputation as a leader in swimming pool installations. LATICRETE provided a similar system for all of the pools at the Beijing Water Cube, site of the 2008 Summer Olympics swimming and diving competitions.

The LATICRETE® System supplied included LATICRETE 3701 Mortar Admix mixed with LATICRETE 226 Thick Bed Mortar to create a firm and level substrate for the installation. For the next step, LATICRETE 9235 Waterproofing Membrane was roller applied to create a permanent waterproofing base for the glass mosaic pool tiles at the MGM Grand Macau. When the waterproofing membrane had cured, a high-strength adhesive consisting of LATICRETE 4237 Latex Additive and LATICRETE 211 Powder was used to set the tiles. For grouting, LATICRETE SpectraLOCK® PRO Grout, a revolutionary grout from LATICRETE was selected. LATICRETE SpectraLOCK PRO Grout offers the same high-performance, color uniformity, durability and stain resistance of an epoxy grout but with extraordinary ease of use.

“Originally, a cementitious waterproofing membrane was selected for the install but it was found to have cracks,” said Phoebi Li, LATICRETE Regional Manager. “They tried to repair it with injections on several occasions with no success. LATICRETE was the only firm that offered to remedy the situation, and our system was installed directly over the original cementitious waterproofing membrane without failure.”
