PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.—Tor Meberg, former chairman of Consolidated Carpet, passed away July 23. He was 79.

Born in Norway in 1928, Meberg came to the United States when he was 12. Later, following WWII, he served in the U.S Army with occupation forces in Japan.

Meberg worked at the family business, Consolidated, for more than 45 years, ultimately serving as chairman of the company. He also was a two-time chairman of the Floor Covering Installers Contractors Association (FCICA), serving as the association’s founding chairman in 1982/83 and then again in 1991/92. Meberg was presented with Honorary Member status by the organization in 2001. And, he was also a winner of the Francis McHale Scholarship Award for his service to the floor covering industry.

FCICA’s current chairman, Christopher Capobianco, said, “The Meberg family is well known and respected in the floor covering industry, especially in the New York commercial market. I met Tor only a few times, but I know full well his impact in building Consolidated Carpet into one of the largest and most respected flooring contractors in North America.

“As one of my predecessors as FCICA chairman,” he continued, “Tor was there in the beginning and was one of the visionaries who knew an organization which serviced the commercial flooring industry and emphasized education and ethical business practices would be successful.

“I know I speak for the entire FCICA membership in extending our condolences to the Meberg family and Consolidated Carpet,” he concluded, “but we also feel joy that we have known a man that lived such a good life, left an amazing legacy behind and set an example for us all.”

Meberg’s survivors include his wife, Eleanor; son, Paul; three daughters: Janice, Ruth and Kari; and nine grandchildren. He also leaves behind three brothers, Arne, Tom and Robert, and two sisters, Laurene and Sonja.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Koinonia Lutheran Camp, 165 Lakeview Drive, Highland Lake, NY 12743 or the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, 61 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg, PA 17325.
