2004 CNYPLA Mechanical Patent of the Year: TaperTite® Flooring System
Article Number: 3217

TaperTite® is a new patented tongue and groove design specifically for solid wood flooring. The non-compression tongue and groove fit gives manufacturers a profile re-grindable tool insert that is axial perfect after each grind (usually 3 times), consequently reducing insert tooling costs in half each regrind. By the design itself, the tooling generates less heat because it eliminates “scrape cutting” thus improving the tool life.

Typically, dull inserts have to be thrown away because the “industry standard” tongue and groove cannot be profile reground. The reason is that when the tongue-producing insert dulls it gets physically smaller and when the groove-producing insert dulls it gets physically bigger. TaperTite® technology addresses these issues in the design itself allowing multiple regrinds with no axial adjustments. The only adjustment required is radial. The TaperTite® patterned inserts will fit in most dedicated head systems without tool body modifications.

TaperTite® specifically addresses in-floor heating systems because of the extreme drying and re-hydrating that solid wood naturally experiences. Tongue and groove fiber compression cannot occur in this circumstance using this patented design, thus minimizing squeaking and “raised edges”.

TaperTite® gives the installer a significant time advantage because the fit-up allows good “starting room” due to the shape of the tongue and groove. The Pre-finisher can push the “flooring panel” together with ease during the finishing line process. TaperTite® eases installation issues with longer lengths and wide plank flooring. The consumer gets a solid wood floor that will generally produce less squeak.

After 11 years of research and development and with over one million square feet of wood flooring now using this patented design, TaperTite® has produced excellent results. In 2004, TaperTite® was selected as Mechanical Patent of the Year by CNYPLA, Central New York Patent Law Association. Our attractive license agreement for TaperTite® will help make today’s solid wood flooring manufacturing better.
