Stanton acquires Antrim

Syosset, N.Y.—In a move designed to expand the breadth of its product offerings, Stanton Carpet Corp. has acquired Antrim Carpets USA for an undisclosed sum.

Founded 10 years ago by Fran O’Neill and Dan McGovern, both of whom will remain with the company, Antrim is an importer and wholesaler of handloomed all-natural wool carpets and custom rugs from India.

Jonathan Cohen, Stanton’s vice president of sales, said the purchase “enables us to offer a category of carpet we did not previously offer. Plus, we now have the opportunity to compete in the custom carpet and rugs arena with handmade wool carpets.”

An added bonus, he noted is having O’Neill and McGovern stay to run Antrim. “They will be responsible for sales, marketing and product development, just now under Stanton’s umbrella. With them, we gain two dedicated and knowledgeable flooring veterans.”

With the acquisition, Antrim’s distribution and customer service center in Bristol, Pa., will be merged into Stanton’s Calhoun, Ga., distribution center. Antrim will continue to work with top agents while working closely with Stanton to provide back-end resources required to more expeditiously execute growth strategies.

This is the first acquisition for Stanton since being purchased last year by private equity firm Linsalata Capital Partners of Mayfield Heights, Ohio.

Whether this is the start of Linsalata going on a buying spree to bolster Stanton remains to be seen. Its Web site, states the firm “partnered with...Stanton with the mutual goal of accelerating growth through geographic and product expansion [including] new channels. The company will accomplish this organically and through add-on acquisitions.”

When Linsalata bought Stanton, it said the carpet company had annual sales of $53 million. Despite the tough economic climate since that time, it reports that Stanton has actually increased sales by $1 million. Crain’s Cleveland Business reported the equity firm saying with the addition of Antrim, Stanton’s sales will be about $60 million.
