Article Editor’s note: A successful dealer who, like many, is looking to computerize his operations asked Scott Perron, author of our “Retailer-2Retailer” column, for some advice. The following is the letter to Scott and well as
his response:

Hi Scott,
I have been reading your articles for some time and think you do a great job. I am working late tonight and trying to find a truly good, yet reasonably easy software program to run my business.

I am an independent retailer, very diversified, doing $1 million the old way. Thus why I am still up.
I obviously need to get computerized and have put it off long enough. I found QFloors, NetSystems (Abbey uses) and RFMS. All these are approximately $3,000 and up just to begin.

Am I headed in the right direction? If not, could you simply suggest some software programs that understand floor coverings’ uniqueness from sales and contracts, costing, commissions, A/P, A/R, etc.?
Thanks in advance.

Scott Perron responds

Dear Jim,
I would venture to say that it might be more advantageous to first start using Quickbooks Pro to get really familiar with invoicing, purchase orders, keeping a data base and simplified accounting.

Quickbooks accounting is extremely simple and every accountant relates to it. After one year you can decide if this is all you need or if industry specific software is more your bag. Quickbooks Pro costs about $300 and training can be had anywhere for a lot less than others.

My gut tells me that QFloors is a great option as well and Pacific Solutions when you get ready to jump all the way in.

Good luck and let me know how you make out.
