| Article | Kansas City, Mo.—For decades hardwood floors have been limited to either strip or plank configurations. But now a new product called Puzzle Floor is throwing a “curve” into wood flooring with a product that runs the gamut from classy and stylish to creative and whimsical. The solid hardwood flooring components of Puzzle Floor, which is manufactured by Briggs Engineered Wood Products, really are as they appear—pre-finished, precision fit puzzle pieces. Two individual patterns interlock quickly and easily to create a floor that’s durable, easy to care for and fun, said Dan Briggs, the manufacturer’s president. “For room renovation or new building projects, Puzzle Floor provides the perfect starting point to create a theme for game rooms, home theatre rooms, family rooms and children’s bedrooms. There are also commercial applications for boutiques, shops and offices. “Puzzle Floor can be either glued-down using a polyurethane-based adhesive, or it can be installed as a floating floor,” he explained. “We offer an underlayment with it that is a closed-cell foam with an adhesive backing on it so you roll the foam out and then you pull off the adhesive strip and attach our floor to the top. “There is no toungue-and-groove or click joint with the Puzzle Floor,” he continued. “What we do, we machine the product so it is shaped like a puzzle. There are two pieces, a female and a male piece that interlock and mechanically join to each other to prevent lateral movement. After we machine a piece, we dip the whole piece in a sealer, so the back, top and all the edges are sealed. This creates a slight interference fit between the two so when you push it into place, it’s a nice, snug fit. If it’s glued down, it’s going to be bonded right to the floor. The underlayment we sell with it as a floating floor, it provides some adhesion as well, so as to keep it from moving vertically.” The product sports a 25-year residential warranty and is available in 13 colors, including Natural Puzzle Floor. Each piece is made from hand selected northern hardwood. Puzzle Floor can even be customized with an engraving of a favorite image, logo or slogan. A digital floor plan is available as a downloadable file to calculate the number of Puzzle Floor pieces needed for a project: www.puzzlefloor.com/digital.htm. “Puzzle Floor is the first thing in the flooring industry to allow consumers to simply send in room dimensions and the company will calculate the exact number of pieces needed to complete the installation,” he concluded. As a premium product Puzzle Floor ranges in price from $18 to $22 per square foot. Currently, Puzzle Floor is sold in the south and Southwestern part of the country. “Our target is specialty flooring shops and design centers that cater to interior designers and architects, that type of market,” concluded Biggs.
