| Article | Hicksville, N.Y.—In today’s competitive, cost-conscious environment, effecient space utilization translates directly into bottom line success. When the question is how to cut and store large rolls of carpet, the answer is cutting machines. “The latest technology is integration with software companies such as Rollmaster, RFMS, Comp-U-Floor and Qfloors,” said Scott Brockie, CEO of Accu-Cut by Brockie International, one of the industry’s leading carpet cutting machine manufacturers, as he described how today’s models are helping dealers be more profitable. “Basically, what happens is the retailer sends the measurements from the office PC straight to the cutting machine,” he explained. “Once the machine makes the cut it prints out a bar code label which can be put on the cut piece or on the roll that goes back on the shelf. Printed on the label is the customer’s name, the room size and the balance on the roll, among other information. By having this information at our fingertips we know exactly which carpet roll was cut. It also prevents the retailer from cutting the wrong dye lot. Precise Cuts “It also makes a more precise cut,” Brockie added. “The operator can’t go past the measurement which has been entered into the machine. The machine slows down and stops at the exact measurement—another money saving factor for the retailer.” Cutting machines are the perfect solution for smaller retailers who don’t have the room to roll out 50- to 60-ft. of carpet, noted Brockie. “With the space the machine takes up, they can actually roll out a whole roll of carpet.” Accu-Cut also caters to a wide range of buying groups including Abbey Carpet, Flooring America, GCO Carpet Outlets, Carpet One, Stone Mountain Carpet Mills, Shaw Flooring Alliance and CarpetsPlus. “We have been selected as the supplier of cutting machines for floor covering professionals throughout the world,” he said. The machines do much more than cut product. As Brockie pointed out, “Our machines also roll the product back up, wrap the cut product and, it will even back-roll remnents with the pile side up for display purposes.” By providing quality service and training, Accu-Cut has remained the carpet cutting machine leader since its inception in 1987. The company hand delivers its machines, making sure the operator understands all functions. “We deliver our machines ourselves and provide training as well,” Brockie explained. “We don’t leave until the retailer is operating the machine themselves. “Accu-Cut machines also utilize circular blades because they cut through thicker carpet and vinyl and you can literally make 10,000 cuts before changing a blade—another savings factor,” he continued. “There is also a sharpening system on the machine that automatically tells you when it needs to be sharpened—usually after 50 cuts. It is as simple as pushing down on a switch.” Machines range in price from $14,000 to $47,000 for a more complex model with a large inspection table. “Some of our more high-end machines have an electronic eye on the table which eliminates the roll from telescoping,” concluded Brockie.
