Article (ATLANTA, GA—MARCH 2015)— Interface, the global manufacturer of modular carpet tile and thought leader in sustainability, has been awarded LEED-CI Gold certification for its flagship Atlanta showroom which opened this past July.

Occupying a 6,900-square-foot space in Brickworks Atlanta, a restored industrial building dating back to the 1880s, the facility posed unique challenges as Interface’s design team sought to meet the energy efficiency criteria set by the USGBC while preserving the foundation and original historic character of the interiors. Among the noteworthy solutions that earned Interface its Gold level rating:

• Lighting power is reduced by more than 30%.
• All workspaces regularly occupied by employees are day lit with access to views of the outdoors.
• 100% of specified equipment and appliances is Energy Star rated.
• Green power was purchased for 100% of energy use for two years.
• 35% reduction in water usage is achieved via aggressive water conservation and specification of low-flush and ultra-low flow fixtures.
• More than 95% of the construction waste was diverted from landfills.
• All wood products are FSC-certified.

Also helping Interface achieve maximum LEED points is the Brickworks location in a pedestrian-friendly, dense, urban neighborhood with access to public transportation. What’s more, a shower and dressing area have been incorporated into the space making it possible for employees to hike or bike to work and then freshen up.

The move to Brickworks, just 60 miles from Interface’s LaGrange, GA, headquarters, has enabled the company to consolidate business units that previously were scattered throughout the area. Now under this one roof are the company’s IT team and local sales associates plus key Interface Americas leadership, including President & CEO John Wells and VP of sales Richard French. Lead architect on the showroom project has been Chicago-based Boeman Design, working in tandem with the internal Interface design team. The Atlanta architect of record was MSTSD.
