Article Arlington, Calif.—The Alliance for Flexible Polyurethane Foam (AFPF) has published a Summary Report on the Benefits of Commercial Bonded Polyurethane Carpet Cushion in the Workplace. The new report that summarizes carpet cushion research and case studies that were developed during the course of a 5-year program to promote the use of bonded polyurethane carpet cushion in the workplace.

“We’ve come a long way since we launched the carpet cushion program in 2000,” explained Neeva-Gayle Candelori, director of the Alliance for the Polyurethanes Industry, the group which co-sponsors AFPF with the Polyurethane Foam Association (PFA). “Back then, the use of carpet cushion in the marketplace was rarely considered by specifiers and there was little industry-wide scientific research to support the benefits that bonded polyurethane carpet cushion brings to commercial carpet.”

In addition to advertising and public relations, the organization set out to create a body of knowledge that would support the decision of facility managers to use carpet cushion in the workplace. During the course of the campaign, AFPF conducted a series of research studies, in conjunction with the Carpet Cushion Council (CCC), that show carpet cushion improves the appearance retention, durability, sound absorption and “vacuumability” of commercial carpet.

AFPF also produced Installation Guidelines for Commercial Carpet and Commercial Bonded Polyurethane Carpet Cushion, a document reviewed by leading flooring associations and heralded by commercial floor covering installers. Increased Knowledge Market research conducted at several AFPF program milestones to measure changes in attitude and awareness toward commercial broadloom cushion, revealed that knowledge of carpet cushion among facility managers, has increased more than 10% since the program began, noted Candelori.

While the association’s carpet cushion outreach program will conclude at the end of this year, the educational materials will continue to be available at www.afpf.com. “The program was an integrated marketing program designed to educate floor covering specifiers in the professional buildings and facilities management business,” said PFA executive director, Bob Luedeka. “We are pleased with the results.

Now that extensive educational materials have been completed, manufacturers of commercial carpet cushion have the opportunity to put them to use in individual customer support programs.” AFPF’s carpet cushion campaign followed a previous program which had been successful in pro moting the use of flexible polyurethane foam in upholstered furniture.
