| Article | (London, UK – May 2012) Tania Johnson Design is pleased to introduce the Water Collection, the newest series of luxurious rugs at ICFF 2012 with the British European Design Group (Booth #2407). With this collection, Tania Johnson continues her exploration of elements from nature and the painstaking practice of translating her photographs into one-of-a-kind rugs. The six designs are a study of water in its purest forms - puddles moving in a breeze, leaves and branches reflected on the surface of a stream, raindrops falling on a lake. Each one transports you into a tiny scene, and tells a story through its subtle, subdued colors and surfaces that beg to be touched. According to Johnson, “The collection started with the photograph that serves as the inspiration for my Reflected Trees design. I was drawn to the way the image appeared and then faded within seconds. I continue to be fascinated by the patterns formed on the surface of water every time the wind blows or the light changes and as with the Light collection, I wanted to capture these fleeting yet poignant moments in time.” The Water Collection: Wave – Illustrates the undulating design that is created as a wave breaks the water’s smooth surface. Shown in mustard and silver shades of wool and silk. 100 knot, wool/silk, 3mm pile height. Splash - Circular ripples of motion form as drops fall on a lake. Hand knotted in pale gold tones of wool and silk. 100 knot, wool/silk, 4mm pile height Rainstorm - Reflections of branches appear and then fade in puddles of water left after a rainstorm. Varying pile heights and the sheen of pure silk mimic the movement of the water. 150 knot, 100% silk, 4mm/6mm low/high pile height Flow - Reflections of leaves flow over a stream’s ripples and waves. Wool and silk mix together in tones of gray blue and gold. 100 knot, wool/silk, 5mm pile height Whirl – The swirling movement of water is captured through gray wools blending into silvery silk. 100 knot, wool/silk, 4mm pile height. Ripples - A reflection of reeds in a lake briefly transformed into a pattern of small waves as the water moves. Finely woven in wool and silk using shimmering shades of olive and sepia. 200 knot, 3mm pile height. Retail prices range from $110 to $300 per square foot. As with all the Tania Johnson Design rugs, the rugs in this collection are customizable. About Tania Johnson Design Founded by Tania Johnson in 2010, Tania Johnson Design specializes in custom made, contemporary, hand knotted rugs. The collection is inspired by the natural world, the way light creates shadows and reflections, the microscopic details found in nature and the infinite textures created through layering. Johnson creates ethereal designs and translates them into intricately woven rugs. The collectable pieces feature original, cutting-edge designs, and are hand knotted by artisans in Nepal using lustrous combinations of silk, wool and pashmina. The New York based, British born designer graduated from London’s Royal College of Art with a Master of Arts in woven textiles. For more than 14 years Johnson designed textiles for such top home brands as Martha Stewart, Chilewich, Vera Wang, and Calvin Klein Home. As a designer for Calvin Klein Home, Johnson created the brands’ first rug collection in 2002. This further developed her passion for innovative rug design. Johnson takes a hands-on approach to her business. This is reflected in her commitment to promoting fair labor standards in the carpet industry. She works with GoodWeave (www.goodweave.org), a certification program which aims to eliminate child labor and to improve working conditions for adults; any carpet with the GoodWeave label means that the rug was made only by adult artisans. In addition, the certification program helps fund educational opportunities for children as well as support and resources for families and weaving communities in South Asia. Tania Johnson Design is represented in NYC exclusively through Alt for Living and in Northern California through Sloan Miyasato.
