| Article | Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 04, 2012 - The Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC) is pleased to announce the exhibition opening of Could Be: The AIA|DC Awards for Unbuilt Architecture today at the District Architecture Center’s SIGAL Gallery. The exhibition presents winners from the first four years of the Washington UNBUILT Awards program, a competition created by AIA|DC in response to the global economic crisis that brought many architectural projects to a halt. The awards recognize and celebrate projects that are commissioned but not yet built, as well as concepts that are entirely theoretical. These criteria provide a broad base of imaginative and thought-provoking submissions that explore and encourage what projects in and around Washington “could be.” “This exhibition displays a cross-section of talent that spans from students to registered professionals with some of the most well-known architecture firms in the country,” says Mary Fitch, Executive Director of the AIA|DC. “In that aspect, I think it’s one of the most unique design competitions and exhibits we have in the city.” The exhibition is organized by the National Building Museum and presented in partnership with The American Institute of Architects, AIA Legacy, ARCHITECT Magazine, Hanley Wood, the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA|DC), and the Washington Architectural Foundation. Award winning projects are being displayed at the District Architecture Center’s SIGAL Gallery between May 3rd and June 30th. The 2012 Washington UNBUILT Awards winners are: Grand Prize Award: Christine Chlebda, Winery in Montalto Honor Award: Ronit Eisenbach, Sky Frames: Instruments of Discovery Honor Award: Nicole Keroack, Alexa Bush, Acquia Venezia: Prototypes for a Sustainable Water Economy Honor Award: Sandra Nam, The Southeast Side Story Honor Award: Jaan Holt, Gui Talarico, Michael Vallen, Liberty Lights Merit Award: Bill Kline, Brian Martin, Brenna Costello, David Treece, (SmithGroup JJR), National Rehabilitation Hospital Merit Award: Shawn Balon, Transitional Boundaries: Reevaluating the Hutong Merit Award: Ryan Erb, Momentum of Public Space/Daniel T.
