| Article | Those of us who share our homes with animals know that it’s important to create an environment that meets the physical and relational needs of the entire family—pets included! But how well do we know our pets? According to 2006 statistics published by the American Veterinary Medical Association, nearly 50% of pet owners think of their pets as family members. These fascinating facts can help you get to know your dog better. • When it comes to eyesight, dogs can’t see quite as well as human beings. However, they aren’t color-blind, as once assumed. They see colors dimly; much like the world appears to humans at dusk. • Dogs make up for their vision deficits by having a sense of hearing over ten times better than ours. Dogs can almost instantly pinpoint the location of a noise, and they hear things happening at four times the distance that we can. (If you’ve ever seen a dog suddenly sit by the door, wagging its tail minutes before you hear its owner’s car approaching, you know the truth of this!) • Dogs have an amazing sense of smell—over 100,000 times stronger than ours. Some of these remarkable animals have successfully been trained to sniff out serious human health conditions, such as epilepsy, diabetes and many forms of cancer. • At one year old, a dog’s physical maturity is similar to that of a 15-year-old human. • Though smaller breeds mature faster than larger ones, dogs of every size share the same anatomy: 321 bones and 42 permanent teeth. • A poll conducted by the American Animal Hospital Association found that over a third of dog owners admitted to talking to their pets over the phone and even leaving answering machine messages for them while away from home. Finally, 87% of dog owners say that when they sit down to relax or watch TV, their dog curls up beside them or at their feet. We think you’ll agree that our Cork Vi-Plank LVT Floating Floor provides these precious pets the warm, comfortable surface they deserve. |
