| Article | Hicksville, N.Y.—Recognizing the need to have a set of standards and guidelines for the cleaning and restoration industry, Steven Spivak, a regular contributor to FCNews’ “ASCR Clean Sweep” column and technical advisor with the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration as well as HousekeepingChannel.com, recently provided input that is expected to become a part of the forthcoming U.S. Standards Strategy (USSS). The USSS is being developed and managed under the auspices of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), which is not only a coordinator of the U.S. national standards system but services as an official U.S. member body to the International Standards Organization (ISO) and the International Eltectrotechnical Commission (IEC) for voluntary international standards. Spivak focused on the critical need for greater efforts in developing service standards and standardization for service based industries such as cleaning and restoration. He noted, “greater emphasis...is needed to markedly enhance the quality, reliability, uniformity, best practices, consumer understanding and effectiveness of services and deliverables by industries such as flooring installation, professional cleaning, remediation and disaster restoration.” Under the USSS’ Imperatives for Action, the following was added by on Spivak’s intervention: “The service industry sector has a significant and rapidly growing presence in the global economy and workforce. The United States must devote more attention to understanding the needs of the service industry sector and establishing service standards initiatives to meet those needs.” Officials from ANSI showed its appreciation to Spivak by publicly thanking him for his input: “On behalf of the USSS committee, we would like to formally express our appreciation for your contribution [to the initiative].” Spivak served four terms as director of ANSI, participated with its consumer advisory group for its activities with ISO and still active in the organization through its committee on education for standards learning and appreciation.
