| Article | In line with its strategy to infuse its global brand with local cultural resonance, Hilton commissioned a leading Dutch interior designer and carpet manufacturer Desso for their new hotel in The Hague, using the surrounding landscape and the city’s cultural heritage to bring individuality to a brand that operates some 3,000 hotels internationally. Hilton The Hague, in Holland’s third largest city, has 195 bedrooms and was created from the 1950's shell of the former Royal Dutch Telecom headquarters. Angelika Kok of Barzileye Concept & Design was responsible for designing the interiors, and took inspiration from the city’s rich heritage to bring local personality to the hotel. Angelika used two design solutions. The first was inspired by aerial footage from the city’s rural surroundings. In close cooperation with the design team at Desso, an international specialist in carpets for the hospitality sector, those images were translated into a carpet design for corridors and meeting rooms. It was then woven in an Axminster carpet by Desso. Second, she pixilated a small portion of the Panorama Mesdag, one of the most iconic paintings in the Netherlands, which was again translated into Axminster carpet by Desso for the hotel’s Mesdag Ballroom, complementing the functionality of the space with a rich geographic and historical context. The Panorama Mesdag is one of the city’s leading artistic attractions, a circular painting 14 metres high and 120 metres in circumference, depicting the sea, the beach and the town of Scheveningen. Painted by Hendrik Willem Mesdag, it was first opened to the public in 1881 and at 1600 square metres is the largest panoramic painting in the world. Desso, which is also headquartered in the Netherlands, designs, manufactures and sells carpet in over 100 countries worldwide. It is one of the leading suppliers of carpet to the hospitality sector internationally, with a design team able to render virtually any design into luxurious broadloom or carpet tiles. The Hilton The Hague isn’t the first project in which Desso has incorporated aerial photography into hotel carpeting, having recently completed projects for boutique hotel brand citizenM in Amsterdam and Glasgow, Scotland – in both cases using images of each city centre, and laid in the hotels’ corridors, again providing local context within a global brand strategy. “We understand the importance of branding in the hospitality sector, and have long experience of working with hotel operators and design teams to creatively bring brands to life,” said Roland Jonkhoff, Managing Director of Desso’s Hospitality, Marine & Aviation division. |
