| Article | TAKE COVER: The National Association of Floor Covering Distributors (NAFCD) had to cancel its meeting in Boca Raton last week and the Carpet Cushion Council (CCC) called off its conference in Tampa, Fla., because of the damage caused by Hurricane Wilma. Convention planners must be more circumspect when designating cities for meetings of their groups. Hurricane Alpha, albeit a weaker storm, is already formed and who knows how far behind are Beta, Gamma and Delta? With travel arrangements made and hotel rooms reserved, cancellations are bothersome and sometimes costly. Maybe we can’t predict the weather but we can be sensible enough not to schedule meetings in Florida or any Gulf Coast state during the hurricane season. That’s tantamount to meeting in a volcano or in Baghdad. LARS STARS: The affable architect of Pergo’s rise and dominance in the U.S., Lars von Kantzow, has been named CEO and president of Nomacorc, the world’s largest producer of synthetic closures to the wine industry. After his successful nine-year stint as president and CEO of Pergo followed by three years as president of TriCrown Consulting, von Kantzow will replace Marc Noël, the company’s founder who will continue as chairman of Noël Group, Nomacorc’s parent. The floor covering industry is losing the quintessential executive in von Kantzow, who is a caring person, having served on the board of directors of the Floor Covering Industry Foundation for years. I wish him well in his new position, which he begins in January. Every time I open a bottle of wine, I’ll think of my friend Lars von Kantzow. Skoal, salud and l’chaim. STARNET’S IN: Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE), which develops market-based solutions for the recycling and reuse of post-consumer carpet, has had an active summer with the interest in recycling mounting. It held a meeting with StarNet, the commercial flooring co-op, to jointly work on the development of a national recycling program. The meeting was “productive and meaningful” and the dialogue will continue. StarNet is one of CARE’s newest members. BON VOYAGE: Tile of Spain and Dwell magazine are conducting a sweepstakes on the publication’s Web site and the winner will receive a trip for two to Spain to visit Cevisama, the international ceramic tile exposition in Valencia. Entering the contest is simple: guests of the Dwell Web site are invited to “learn more about the endless possibilities of ceramic tile from Spain and complete a short quiz on the information provided.” Upon completion of the quiz, each participant is entered in the sweepstakes. All entries must be received by Nov. 30. It’s that easy. The prize includes travel expenses, accommodations and admission to Cevisama, which will be held Feb. 7 to 11, 2006. The primary objective of the contest is to educate consumers on the attributes of tiles from Spain. It looks like the mission will be accomplished. WELCOME: Shaw Industries has completed the acquisition of the Carolina Paper Overlays facility in Welcome, N.C., from Dynea Group. The move will enhance the company’s laminate manufacturing operations. The facility and its 50 employees will become part of Shaw’s Hard Surfaces Group. The plant produces paper overlays for the laminate flooring and decorative melamine laminating industries and is a key supplier to Shaw’s laminate production operations in Ringgold, Ga., and Algona, Wash. The 100,000-sq.-ft. Welcome facility began operation in 2000 and currently has two paper treating lines. |
