| Article | ST LOUIS—Michael Martin has assumed the CEO responsibilities at the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) seven months earlier than originally anticipated. Earlier this year, Martin was hired as COO (FCNews, Feb. 21/28) with the intention of replacing Ed Korcazk as CEO upon his retirement at the end of the year. But following the association’s recent convention (FCNews, May 2/9), Korczak, who had been staying on to groom Martin for the position, said the time was right to “hand over the reins and move on to the next phase of my life. NWFA’s leadership transition is well under way, allowing me the luxury of retiring earlier than I had originally planned.” Korczak had served as NWFA’s executive director and CEO for the past 17 years and was the executive director of the American Floorcovering Association the previous 16 years until it merged with the Western Floor Covering Association to form the World Floor Covering Association. NWFA’s newly elected chairman Rick Holden of Derr Flooring in Willow Grove, Pa., said Korczak’s “contributions to the [organization] and the industry have been significant” and he “will be missed. We wish Ed well in his retirement.” Martin, who came to NWFA after spending the previous 13 years as vice president the National Association of Electrical Distributors (NAED), will now oversee an organization with 3,100 members worldwide and has become recognized for its leadership role in developing standards and programs that help the industry ensure the wood it uses was harvested legally, but in a sustainable manner as well. It has also created numerous educational opportunities for members, from selling to installing to publishing Hardwood Floors magazine, along with providing various benefits such as technical services to help advance their professionalism and success. The easy transition for Martin to the flooring industry comes as no surprise to NWFA as Korczak said: “Martin has a strong association background. In addition, he brings a wealth of other experience, including roles as a speaker, meeting planner and convention manager.” One of Martin’s primary functions during his time with NAED was to serve as publisher of The Electrical Distributor (TED) magazine. He also helped develop the association’s strategic direction and budget and was responsible for overseeing its websites, communications and public relations. For more on the NWFA, call 800.422.4556. |
