Article ATLANTA—The market that for more than half a century has powered the rug, home, gift and apparel wholesale industry is poised to set 2011 buying and selling in motion, said Chas Sydney, senior vice president, area rug/external business development, with the Atlanta International Area Rug market featuring the National Oriental Rug Show (NORS) and the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings market.

“The year’s first international market, and home to the world’s largest single product collection, AmericasMart creates the stage on which manufacturers, designers and sales representatives unveil new lines, launch designs and introduce categories,” he explained.

Dates for the area rug market are Jan. 13 to 16, while the market temporaries will be on display from Jan. 14 to 16. Area rug temporaries will once again support the four floors of permanent area rug showrooms. Dates for the gift/home furnishings market are Jan. 12 to 19, while the market temporaries will be open from Jan. 14 to 18.

“The temporaries continue to serve as a launching pad for up-and-coming designers and manufacturers,” he said. “The 13 permanent product centers spanning the four-building campus will welcome new companies opening their first Atlanta showrooms and will house newly expanded showrooms.”

Some highlights:

• Two companies expanding their showrooms are Karastan and LR Re-sources. The latter will soon boast a 9,300-square-foot showroom—a significant increase from its original 1,700-square-foot space, while Karastan will now offer 1,550 square feet with its new expansion.

• The 2011 America’s Magnificent Carpets Awards (AMCA) “will celebrate the triumph of design achievement in the industry’s most spectacular introductions in one night of elegance, excellence and excitement, complete with high-energy performances and entertainment,” Sydney said. It will once again be staged at the Marriott Atlanta Marquis on Saturday, Jan. 15.

• As part of its educational programming, AmericasMart University (AMU) will host several seminars specific to the area rug industry, co-hosted by the Oriental Rug Importers Association. (Editor’s note: Details will be announced soon.)

• The World Rug Gallery will open its new showroom in space C-3.

• The Museum of Introductions (MOI) gallery will “feature the industry’s most innovative and design-driven area rugs and carpets,” Sydney concluded.
